The only birth I can find on FreeBMD for the right time and place is

I have been told by my Aunty he had a sister named Hazel.

I have found one Hazel C Long

Births Sep 1914 Long Hazel C Lapper Lambeth 1d 742

Also found 2 further children in the same district for the same time

Births Sep 1917 Long Basil C Lapper Lambeth 1d 557
Births Mar 1919 Long Harold C Lapper Lambeth 1d 488

When I delved deeper I found these 3 children also registered like so

I can't find a marriage between a Lapper + Long + Chisholm anywhere.

This has had 2 of us going around and around in circles for the best part of a week.

Anyone have an explanation why the should be registered twice with different surnames?

it's possible that their parents were not married when the births were registered. Have you found Cyril on the 1911 Census?

There are also other families boarding there: Reynolds, Ford and Remmett.

The latter looks more promising, but can't find a marriage for Robert c1908/9/10

In the 1881 and 1891 census, there is a Henrietta Ethel LAPPER born abt. 1880 in Canterbury.

Cyril LONG born London abt. 1911 (age given as 4 months)

Robert & Ethel state that they've been married 2 years but I cannot find a definite match. They are Boarders.

In London electoral registers for 1935 I've found a Basil Chisholm Long living at 206 Eardley Road , Streatham (that's south London not far from Lambeth).

I'll follow him up.

In the 1881 and 1891 census, there is a Henrietta Ethel LAPPER born abt. 1880 in Canterbury.

In the electoral register of 1920, there is a Henrietta Ethel LONG and Robert John LONG living at 65 Flaxman Road, Lambeth.Also listed at this address is James DAVEY, Harriet Geoghegan, James Geoghegan. Henrietta is there for a number of years following this but not sure about Robert yet.
