If it helps anyone, (the new) FamilySearch has a baptism for a John Smith, son of George and Frances on 10 June 1827 in Barlborough.

    1851 census reference HO107/2340 f 437 p 5.

    Hi Duchess,
You have not given any further details of John on subsequent censuses but it seems to me he is the one who marries an Ellen and lives in Sheffield from 1851 onwards, is that correct?

Pam has mentioned that a John Smith was baptised in Barlborough in 1827, son of George & Frances. This George & Frances (Fanny) baptise several children in Barlborough and they are on the 1841 census in Barlborough ref HO107/193 Folio 21 Page 10 but there is no son John with them. However George & Fanny also baptise a son George in Barlborough 22 May 1831 who is also missing from the family home in 1841. There is a John Smith age 15 & George Smith age 12 living together in Duffield Derbys, born in county at ref. HO107/193 Folio 21 Page 10. This is a possibility.

Jeeb, I presume that you agree that George and Frances are the same people as George and Fanny? (And possibly even the William and Frances given as the parents of William who was baptised in 1821 in Barlborough?)
The new FamilySearch site has an entry for George and Fanny, parents of Hannah baptised in 1833 which was taken from the BTs, and it also has an entry for Hannah with her parents listed as George and Frances but I can't find a reference for the film number for that entry. So I'm fairly certain that they are the same people.

Excellent spot re the John and George in Duffield in 1841 - especially given the other John Smiths of a similar age in Duffield.

Quite frankly, Duchess, given how common the name of John Smith is, and with no birthplaces given in the 1841 census, unless anyone finds a more likely candidate, I think the best you can hope for is to enter Jeeb's find as 'quite probable, but unable to be proven'.

But someone had already found a better candidate, hadn't they?
Check again Mutley's post #4 in this thread.
