    Default HUGHES - WELSH CONNECTION?

The first message I posted gave details of son Benjamin as follows:

    Hughes, Benjamin
son of Benjamin and Sarah, shopkeeper of North End, Fulham
11 July 1819 - baptised at All Saints Fulham

I HAVE NOW BEEN GIVEN THE NEWS THAT THERE WERE TWO SISTERS

    Hughes, Eleanor Elizabeth
    born 16 July 1822
daughter of Benjamin and Sarah, shopkeeper of Walham Green
25 August 1822 - baptised at All Saints Fulham

    Hughes, Sarah
daughter of Benjamin and Sarah, shopkeeper of Walham Green
19 April 1821 - baptised at All Saints Fulham

so one of these must be the Aunt in Wales that the family thought a descendant went to

HELP! still stuck - can anyone find the family in the 1841 census please

Also still stuck with finding marriages/life of Hannah and Sarah Hughes -details as before.

    thanks
    Jill

    Default HUGHES - WELSH CONNECTION?

    HUGHES: WELSH CONNECTION?

    HELP NEEDED TRACING FAMILY

Elizabeth HUGHES was my gm's mother and was one of 5 born to Benjamin HUGHES and Alice CLARK but now discover the latter weren't married. Parents lived first in Newcastle, where two children born then three born London.

    1851 census: HO107; Piece: 2407; Folio: 14; Page: 21

    1861 census: RG 9; Piece: 349; Folio: 192; Page: 9

Parents both died 1864 when Elizabeth and two sisters went to workhouse schools. I have information from then on but wish to work backwards and find a Welsh connection.

    1871 census: RG10; Piece: 1323; Folio: 122; Page: 21

(Hannah and Elizabeth are 'pauper inmates' in the Central London District School for the Children Chargeable to the City of London in Hanwell)

Regarding the time that Hannah and Elizabeth Hughes
spent in the Central London School District School, Hanwell, it appears
from the records that after the deaths of their parents, both girls said
to be from the parish of St. George the Martyr (Southwark) entered the
St. George's School, Mitcham along with their sister Alice on 18th
August 1864. I do not know when Alice left the school, but Hannah left
to enter the Central London School District School on 2nd June 1870 and
Elizabeth left and also entered the Central London School District
School on 3rd November 1870. According to the records, Hannah left the
school on 21st December 1872 to an unknown destination and Elizabeth
left to go into service on 19th November 1873. No details as to where
    she went have survived."

Elizabeth left the workhouse school in November 1873 "to go into service" but is believed to have been sent TO HER FATHER's SISTER IN WALES.. She left to stay with her sister Alice USHER and is with Alice in the 1881 census in Picktree. (RG11; Piece: 4982; Folio: 45; Page: 29)

Have found Father Benjamin HUGHES' baptised at All Saints, Fulham, parish church on 11th July 1819, the son of Benjamin and Sarah HUGHES. His father was a shopkeeper and the address given is simply "North End". The name of the officiating minister was Christopher Lipscomb. [LMA ref: X048/004] Does anyone know if I can identify his shop from a trade directory of the time and where this is likely to be found?

Can anyone find the family in the 1841 census please?

Nothing known of marriage between Benjamin and Sarah
Benjamin the Father died in 1830 aged 44 and was buried at All Saints, Fulham (the same church where Benjamin junior was baptised) on 22nd April, 1830 and he lived at the same address of North End.

Would also welcome help with finding information on two of the children of Benjamin and Alice namely
Sarah born 1850 Newcastle on Tyne and Hannah born 1857 Lambeth

    EXTRA INFORMATION

Have now been told that Benjamin the son had two sisters - so one of these must be the Aunt believed to live in Wales

    Hughes, Benjamin
son of Benjamin and Sarah, shopkeeper of North End, Fulham
11 July 1819 - baptised at All Saints Fulham

    Hughes, Eleanor Elizabeth
    born 16 July 1822
daughter of Benjamin and Sarah, shopkeeper of Walham Green
25 August 1822 - baptised at All Saints Fulham

    Hughes, Sarah
daughter of Benjamin and Sarah, shopkeeper of Walham Green
19 April 1821 - baptised at All Saints Fulham

Do hope someone can help me!
    Thanks
    Jill

very many thanks for finding out this information so promptly which is wonderful. I'm tying myself in knots with this one!

When I refer to the 1851 census that is for Newcastle and Roger the lodger I have found is indeed Alice's brother and
they are from Thrintoft - thanks so much.

However I have found from then on ie Alice Clark married or should I say lived with Benjamin Hughes (that's another story!)
and know they both died in 1864 with one of their children being my late maternal gm's mother.

But as I say, I would like to find the welsh connection and so work backwards. We have Benjamin's baptism in 1819 in present
day London and now I have his two sisters but would like to find his family in the 1841 census to try to trace his parents
and see if there is any mention of Wales. See my initial email for further details ie of Benjamin the Father etc. etc.

Hope I have got this right!

I read it as lodger, so no help at all!

Again, very many thanks for finding out so much information which is very good of you.

Yes thanks, I have information ie dates of when three daughters of Benjamin and Alice were in workhouse schools/Pauper inmates
in Mitcham then Hanwell, following the death of both parents in 1864.

I have marriage details for daughter Elizabeth because she was my maternal gm's mother.

I also know about daughter Alice who in the 1881 Picktree census (near Newcastle on Tyne) is now married to James Usher
(Elizabeth is with her prior to her 1881 marriage - having supposedly LEFT WALES WHERE SHE WAS WITH HER FATHER' s SISTER)

Reference my initial email nothing is known about Hannah and Sarah after they left the schools.

That leaves the last child being son Francis and yes thanks have been put in touch with him thanks to the help
of someone who saw a message on a forum like Roots from one of Francis' descendants.

Please keep up the good work as you know better than I what info is out there with earlier census returns etc.
ie Benjamin and his Father's family - so I end as I started with the question - is there a Welsh connection?!
    best wishes
    Jill
