Do you have any further details for him?

There is a record of a Gaylard Hopwood, age 27, Unaccompanied, sailing on 2 October 1924 from London on the Berrima supposedly bound for South Africa. His U.K. address was given as 198 Frederick St. Oldham and his occupation as Merchant Leather. However, the Berrima was bound for Australia.

    Hi Pat and welcome

This thread on another forum has details of the accidental death in 1939 of a Gaylard Hopwood:

He had come over c.1924 on the 'Berrima', which ties in very nicely with the passenger list found by Doug.

The above-mentioned thread gives dates of two marriages, one in England in 1921 and one in East Malvern, Victoria, in 1931. From the online index to Victoria BDMs the 1931 marriage was to Eunice Rossiter.

Interestingly, it seems that Gaylard had an alias: one post says 'Gaylard apparently had an alias Harry Taylor' while another, quoting a coroner's report, also gives the name Gaylard St Taylor.

December quarter 1921, Manchester registration district, volume 8d, page 359: Gaylard HOPWOOD and Clare FIELDING.

I can see no divorce papers in section J77 of the National Archives for HOPWOOD, TAYLOR or St TAYLOR that relate to this pair between 1921 and 1934.

The first marriage was at Manchester Cathedral according to this thread:

which has some interesting information about Gaylard's father.
