Hi Everybody
Having come back to my family history after a few years (Life does seem to get in the way), I have realised that I have a family member who seems to have gone missing after the 1861 census.
He is....
George Beaumont of Wooldale Yorkshire,
Born 1844
Father was Jonas Beaumont
Mother Mary Beaumont (nee Lee)
He was listed as 17 on the 1861 census and then goes missing, can anyone help with where he disappeared too?
Regards
Andy

Hello Andy,
Have you ruled out the following death registration for a George BEAUMONT in Huddersfield registration district, which covered Wooldale?
March quarter, 1867, volume 9a, page 219, aged 23

The West Yorkshire Non-Conformist records (images of original registers) at Ancestry have the burial of a George Beaumont of Scholes Moor, aged 23, on 19 Jan 1867, at Hepworth Wesleyan Chapel. It's not my bit of Yorkshire, but looking at a modern street map, I see that Hepworth, Scholes Moor and Wooldale are all very close.
If you don't have an Ancestry subscription yourself, you can access it for nothing in most public libraries in England.

Hi Arthur
Thanks for the info.
This matches up with the Death Reg that Jan posted above. So I think my step will have to be to order the Cert and to check if there is any additional information that can be found.

Hi Andy,
By 1881 Jonas & Mary Beaumont and their son Johnson had moved to Mirfield. The 1881 census gives a birth year for these 3 people as Jonas 1812, Mary 1817 & Johnson 1857.
These deaths are in Mirfield St Mary:-
Jonas 11 Aug 1884 age 72 (Birth year 1812)
Mary 7 Oct 1890 age 71 (Birth year 1819)
Johnson 22 July 1896 age 39 (Birth year 1857)
It is likely these are George Beaumont' parents & brother. There are two George Beaumont burials in Mirfield St Mary that could be possibilities:-
George 17 May 1887 age 42 (Birth year 1846)
George 29 Aug 1894 age 49 (Birth year 1845)

Hi Jeremy
Thanks for the info.
The details for both Jonas and Johnson are both correct and correspond with details I got from a book by Diana & Michael Beaumont.
As to Mary (born Abt. 1816) after Jonas died she remarried (at the age of 72) and was on the 1891 census for Mirfield with the last name of Cole and Johnson was living with them.
Regards
Andy

Hi Andy,
No I couldn't find him in 1871/1881 either which suggests he was probably dead by 1871. However there are many reasons why people are not or can't be found on the censuses. Mis-spelling of name is the most common or simply missed off but of course he may have been out of the country. Many young men were beginning to explore the world by late 19th century, seeking to make a fortune in gold mines or take advantage of farming places like Canada & Australia with their promises of a better life. Remember too a lot of young men were soldiers and were stationed abroad in places like Ireland.
There is a George Beaumont with a wife Amelia born about 1846 in Wooldale, he appears on the censuses at Saddleworth and is still alive in 1901. I don't think this is your man though as he has a daughter Phyllis and there was a George Beaumont born in 1846 in Wooldale with a mother Phyllis.
With regards to Mary Beaumont his mother, it was a John Coe she married and just incase you don't have it, here is her burial:-
Mary Coe 9 Dec 1898 aged 83 buried at Mirfield St Mary.(Birth year 1815)

Hi Jeremy
Thanks again,
Yes when I found George and Amelia on the 1881 Census, I thought I had found his hiding place only to realise on further investigation that it was a different George :-(.
With regards to Mary, Yes I had this info - But thanks very much for taking the time to look this up for me.
Regards
Andy
