Was your John R Smith's middle name Robert - and was his father Thomas who was a newsagent?

If so, then Ancestry has a marriage on 8 July 1879 at Twickenham, Middlesex of a John Robert SMITH whose occupation is given as painter (father Thomas, a newsagent) and Eliza Lunn GARDNER (spinster). John Robert's age is given as 23 and Eliza's 20.

There is a birth registration on Freebmd of an Annie Elizabeth SMITH - March Q 1881, Kingston Registration District (2a/345) which could be your Annie E as Kingston covers East Molesey. If the above marriage is the one you are looking for, then you would need to send for a copy of the birth certificate for this Annie Elizabeth to see if the parents are John Robert and Eliza.
