CLARA SAMUEL 1860-1931-JACOBS/PLATNAUER LINKS

This post is a response to the New York Times article Thurs Jan 25 1906 cited in the "Morris Newton Nathan-Lizzie Jacobs" post 10 -10/05/2012.
In the article reference was made to Clara Platnauer and Harry Braham Jacobs who was also known as Janson. Further data on the relationship between Clara Platnauer and Harry Braham Jacobs is described in part on the Jacobstree website ( the china/glass dealers; manufacturers and other trades- family name Litzen/Letson) and the following data is an attempt to 'flesh out' further information.
Harry Braham Jacobs b 1859 was the son of David Jacobs and Matilda Rebecca Jacobs. He married Clara Samuel on March qtr 1881 Westminster 1a 730.Clara was born Dec qtr 1860 Liverpool 8b 95 the daughter of Henry Israel Samuel and Rachel Schreiner Wolfe.
Harry and Clara had 4 children-Nora;Byron;Grace;David ( I have yet to confirm full dobs for them). It appears from the newspaper account that sometime between the date of birth of the last child Harry and Clara separated and/or divorced ( there is no current record of their divorce) because Clara had 3 other children by Nathaniel Platnauer son of George Platnauer and Julia Silverstone. Nathaniel was born 6 April 1863 Clifton Gloucs and died July qtr 1937 Wandsworth 1d 368.

At some time Clara was in South Africa and an incoming passenger record shows she departed Durban South Africa with Gloria Platnauer age 18 with SA being the country of last permanent address and arrived Southampton 25 Oct 1920.

The probate for Clara Platnauer of 5 Inglewood Mansions West End Lane West Hampstead Middlesex wife of Nat Platnauer died 21 Sept 1931 - probate granted to Henry Samuel merchant- Effects £3632 15s 2d

Clara Samuel is related to the H Samuel Jewellers as 1st cousin of Edgar Samuel who developed the retail side of the company.

It appears from the NY Newspaper article that Harry Braham Jacobs was using an adopted surname of Janson for unknown reasons and was no longer married to Clara. There is data albeit partial on the children of Clara/Harry and Nathaniel including in some cases their marriages. However, this data is currently limited and requires confirmation.

Comments regarding the whereabouts of Harry Braham Jacobs/Janson and what happened to him would be welcome. It is also likely that he may have re- married and used different alias.

The 3 children of Clara Samuel/Jacobs and Nathaniel Platnauer were Joyce b1901;Gloria b 1902;Natalie b 1905- I have not fully checked the GRO Birth Index for them and it maybe they were born in South Africa.

For researchers who have Harry Braham Jacobs on their family tree he was born Henry David Jacobs son of David Jacobs and Matilda Rebecca Jacobs ( cousins marrying each other). Full details of all the Jacobs lines can be seen on the Jacobstree site but as a very brief summary Henry appears with his parents and some of his siblings in 1861 Census RG9 005 6 9 1 3 and RG 9 005 6 91 1 2 at 33 Haymarket ( Crown Copyright,TNA). He is known as Henry D Jacobs age 1. At the same address in 1871 RG 0358 02 03 ( Crown Copyright, TNA) his mother Matilda is a widow and living with her son Philip. Henry is now Harry B Jacobs age 11 and recorded as a visitor. Philip and his brother Angelo appear in 1861 Census in Brighton at a Jewish school.
It is very likely that Henry David Jacobs known as Harry Braham Jacobs known as Harry Janson changed his name post or even pre the 1906 USA court proceedings. It also appears from the New York newspaper article of 1906 that Nathaniel Platnauer was calling himself Edward.

My error regarding Henry D Jacobs ( looking at too many Jacobs/Levy)- he was born Harry Braham Jacobs see GRO Birth Index July qtr 1859 St Martins in the Fields Middlesex 1a 307.The 1861-71 census records and his marriage to Clara Samuel are consistent with him using Harry Braham Jacobs.
