    Default George Edwin Hall

    Hi Everyone

I know quite a lot about the later life of George Edwin Hall born about 1871 (no idea where) married 1912 Pontefract to Agnes Rombach (from Edinburgh), married 1923 Leith Edinburgh to Edith Windle died 1939 (Leith Edinburgh. Occupation Watchmaker/Jeweller. He had several children by both marriages.

My brickwall is that I can find no trace of him before his marriage in 1912.

His 1923 marriage shows Father William Hall Mother Elizabeth Hall (nee Knott) and his 1912 marriage certificate shows Father William Hall decd. Occupation Engineer and Iron Founder (Master) I can find no trace of William & Elizabeth Hall either ???

The father of Agnes was a Watchmaker from Germany ...

Oral history says that George Edwin Hall came from the North of England ... but I don't know if that is true. I have checked the addresses given by him and Agnes on the marriage certificate and they provide no clues

    Wendy,

The only marriage between a Hall and a Rombach 1910 - 1914 in Scotland was in 1912 but the parties were William and Rose. PM me if you would like further information. The occupation of the brides father matches your current knowledge.

Jenni, Wendy quoted the marriage as 1912 in Pontefract, Yorkshire and this is confirmed on FreeBMD

The LDS has this 1881 census which looks promising

    Wendy,
I did not read your first post correctly! You seem to have found George but his wife's sister married another Hall in 1912 from the look of it. The two Hall families may not be related of course.

Did some further searching and Now believe the two Rombach girls to be cousins. There were several Rombach males born Germany who were watchmakers and could be brothers or cousins but I would imagine related. Mostly Glasgow and Edinburgh.

    Hi Jenni ...

I have already managed to do most of the Rombach tree ... its hard making all the connections but I am pretty sure that the ones who came over from Baden were all related (in one way or another)

    Hi Jan ...

That does indeed appear to be a marriage between William Hall and Elizabeth Nott ... but sadly on Census records William is a Farm Labourer then a Railway Labourer and Elizabeth dies before the 1871 census. Also there is no son George

sometimes I think that I will never crack this mystery
