Agnes Ann Godfrey

I hope a moderator will be able to link this thread to Joseph Godfrey, an earlier thread of mine where Agnes reared her head but was not looked into.

Ann Godfrey was born on 1st Sept 1862 at 33 Kid Street Woolwich. Her father was Joseph Godfrey.
Ann was seen with the family on the 1871 census at Shepperton and nothing after that until another member found her in Australia. Ann appears to have adopted the name Agnes and she marries Francis Moran in 1885 in Sydney, Australia. Little else is known about her except an obituary of Francis Moran that says



MORAN.—Sacred to the loving memory of my husband,
Francis Bede (Frank) Moran, father of Francis
Joseph Moran, of 193 Rose-street, Darlington, who
died in the Sydney Hospital after two days' pain-
ful suffering, May 22nd, 1904. Inserted by his de-
voted wife, youngest daughter of Joseph Hall (head
colour-sergeant in Her Majesty's Navy of the Royal
Marines for twenty nine years. Entered the service
as recruiting sergeant at the ago of 17, pensioned
off from the Navy, 1872, proprietor of the Hope Inn,
Shepperton Green, near London, England, for twenty-
one years, and Anne Josephine Godfrey; grand-
daughter of George Smith (captain for thirty-nine
years in Her Majesty's Navy) and Josephine Smith,
both dearly loved and highly esteemed by all who
knew them for their noble qualities as men and their
inestimable virtues as parents. There is not a thing
so bright on earth as their names that live behind
them.
No tongue can speak of the love so sweet
And the sorrows for my husband I bore;
God came and consoled me in all my trials,
And will do so for evermore.
Though short was his call, he prepared life well to
resign,
I pray God of mercy, His bright light divine,
Sweet rest in peace on my husband shine.
His loving, dutiful, wife, Agnes Anne Moran. Home

The information on her father Joseph is correct, except she calls him Joseph Hall, the family do use the name Hall as a middle name. Ann/Agnes brother was Joseph Hall Godfrey. Ann/Agnes appears confused about her mother. Ann/Agnes mother died the year she was born.
Ann/Agnes father Joseph died in 1893 and in his Will, he mentioned all his children except Ann/Agnes but perhaps this was because she was in Australia.
I would love to find more out about Ann/Agnes, why and when she went to Australia, has anyone any suggestions?

Joseph Hall Godfrey, Agnes/Ann's brother died in 1880 perhaps, as you cant find her in 1881, this is when she went to Australia?
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au has the birth and death of her son Francis Joseph, 1885 - 1960 but not her death.
Perhaps someone has access to the immigration records and can find her arrival in Australia.

Mother of Ann/Agnes b. 1862, died the next year and father married Sarah?.

Sarah would be the only mother that Agnes/Ann knows.

This might be her death in Sydney.

20827/1942 Annie MORAN parents Joseph and Sara Ann North Sydney

I cannot see a notice in a newspaper, or a burial location.

I think the marriage certificate will give you very useful information.

She might be the only one of this family to migrate to NSW but you might suspect that she has family in Sydney.

Because she is young you might find that relative as witness on the certificate.

Yes that looks it might be her death. I am definitely going to send for the marriage certificate., they are quite pricey!
It seems strange Ann/Agnes went to Australia so young. Was it common for young single girls to go. I think we have followed most of her siblings and they stayed in the UK. Ann/Agnes did have an auntie Elizabeth who married Thomas Cattell and settled in Armidale, NSW. Elizabeth Cattell died in 1886.
They just don't want to give their secrets up. Thanks again ELMA
