Like Mutley, I suspect it is "Ship's Steward". Or maybe "Ship's Stoker"?
Can you give us the location you found that phrase so we can check?

Hi I found it on a 1911 census for John Henry davies. When I looked into the census which was hand written it does look like it could be steward. Unfortunately I cannot zoom into it to see it more clearly but I think you could be right it has been misinterpreted.
thanks for your help. ruth

You are welcome.
If you give us the 1911 reference or the birth date for John and where he was in 1911 so we might find him, I am sure the members will take a look for you to help confirm the occupation. Some of the hand writing of our ancestors was not always easy to read.
I don't know much about military history but I have a feeling that stewards were often Merchant Navy men, do you know on which ship John served?

Please do remember to provide census references. I think you must be referring to
The National Archives; RG 14/31974 schedule 67 (Wales)
It says Ship's Steward...Merchant Service
It's wise to treat the transcription as a finding aid only and to extract your information from the image, ie the original source.

Thanks very much for your help. I have had a number of replies and believe that item was recorded incorrectly and is in fact a ship steward. Thanks again for your assistance.

It was wrongly transcribed by Ancestry. FMP correctly show it as "Steward"
