Hi All,
I have not posted for about 7 years due to ill-health etc, but am trying to get back into the swing. I have been searching for information about my g-g grandfather, John Jackson, who was born in Wigan in about 1834. I found him, a widower, in the 1871 and 1881 censuses in Manchester (Chorlton) with two children, Joseph (my g-grandfather) born 1863, and Jane, born 1865. The mystery is that I cannot find any record of his marriage to Mrs Jackson, (no idea of her name), nor any record of a death of a female Jackson, between 1865 and 1871, of about the right age. The children were both born in Salford, but whether John married in Wigan or the Manchester area, I cannot discover.
I would be so grateful for any information or suggestions anyone might have. Thanks, Jos Le Voi, Brisbane.

Is this John in 1871 - RG10 3982 22 38?
The youngest child is Martha Ann - age 3, born Gorton (Free BMD = Martha Ann Jackson, Dec 1867, Chorlton 8c 515?)
Free BMD Deaths - Esther Jackson, Chorlton, Dec 1867, 8c 413, age 28
FreeBMD Marriages - John Jackson, Manchester, Dec 1855, 8d 386. On the same page Esther Morrow
possibility?

You only mention two children, but is this your family?
1871: RG10; Piece: 3982; Folio: 23; Page: 39
4 Gardner St, Gorton, Lancashire
John Jackson 36, wid, hammerman for a smithy, Wigan
Phoebe Turner 65, sister, wid, Pemberton
Mary Jackson 15, dau, Salford
George Jackson 12, son, Salford
Joseph Jackson 8, son, Salford
Jane Jackson 6, dau, Salford
Martha Ann Jackson 3, dau, Gorton
1881: RG11; Piece: 3903; Folio: 104; Page: 48
33 Casson St, Gorton, Lancashire
John Jackson 47, wid, iron striker, Wigan
Joseph Jackson 18, son, Salford
Jane Jackson 16, dau, Salford
If the above is your family, then I think they can can be found in the 1861 census living in Salford with John married to Marytha. (1861: RG 9; Piece: 2922; Folio: 15; Page: 24) Can post up the details for you.
Note: there is a death for a Martha Jackson in 1870 in the Chorlton registration district. Age 37.

The National Archives; RG 10/3982 f 22 p 38?
You need to get some birth certificates of the children. This is the systematic way to work - one generation at a time, assembling evidence as you go.
In the 1871 census, who is Phoebe Turner, sister?

Thanks so much. I have seen a child Martha mentioned elsewhere as a child of John Jackson, so I will investigate this link.

Wigan marriage mystery
Thanks so much to everyone who has repiled. The facts I do have, from my now deceased father, are that John Jackson was definitely a blacksmith/striker, as his son Joseph became in his turn. Dad also talked of his great-aunt Jane Jackson, but never mentioned any other siblings. I am pretty sure that the Casson Street entry in the 1881 census is my family, as they lived in roughly the same area until post ww2. I now have all this new information, which I will eagerly follow up. I am very grateful to you all. Jos.
