Angry Guinness Trust Building Vauxhall Walk Lambeth

Hi, I am new to this site. I have read all about the Guinness Trust Buildings on an old blog site as my Grandparents (Streets) were living at 100 Guinness Building Vauxhall Walk in 1936 when my mother was born before they went to South Africa. I am currently in London and went to Vauxhall walk to have a look but of course the building was demolished in the 1970's. I have desperately tried to find out which building in Vauxhall Walk has replaced the Guinness Building to no avail, I have searched every site possible. Does anyone know the answer. I have seen an old photograph of the demolition but it did not give me any clue as to where in Vauxhall Walk it was. Just want to go and see the exact site where my mother and family once lived.

Other people may be able to lay their hands on better resources than I can but I believe the Guinness Buildings were on the west side of Vauxhall Walk, south of Glasshouse Street (now Glasshouse Walk)

    Welcome to the forum.

Google books has an article and a picture of the Vauxhall Walk building, I think maybe in 1973 before it was demolished.
If you look in the bottom right hand corner of the picture there is a small building which may be a clue. There may also be something further in the article that could help.

The book is called Five Per Cent Philanthropy by John Nelson Tarn (Picture is on Page 105)

Either way, the picture is just as I remember it and worth having.

This is a shelter for London taxi drivers.

Have a look at this for a comparable picture: http://www.

Go to old-maps.co.uk (put www. in front) and put in coordinates 530486, 178250.

Switch to the 1910-1915 town plan (1:1056 scale) to see the location of the Guinness Trust Buildings. The labels are on three rows of buildings but it looks as if one above and one below may also be in the same group.

As Peter has said they were south of Glasshouse Street (now Glasshouse Walk) at the western end. Google maps shows a pub called the Black Dog on the NW corner of Glasshouse Walk and Vauxhall Walk. On satellite view there's an area with trees and grass in the block to the south of this. On streetview it looks like a park. (Google for "Black Dog, Vauxhall Road").

There may well be more detailed maps that show numbers on the buildings. Perhaps there is a local studies library in Lambeth that could help?

Edit: try the Lambeth Archives, the Minet Library, 52 Knatchbull Road. See

If you google "raging sea of flame" and click on "news.google.com/newspapers" you will find an item from the Glagow Herald which indicates how extensive the site was.

(After "PMing" you how to find the site named on the 1915 map I wanted to determine if the whole site indicated related to the Guinness Buildings).

    Glad you enjoyed your trip
