I am seeking help from anyone who might have directories for the Tipton area please.....
My ancestor Henry Ward is shown on the 1911 census as being the publican of the Miners Arms
public house, 56 Owen Street, Tipton. I have no idea when he actually started his term as publican
there (he wasn’t there in his 1901 census entry) & I do not know the extent of his time there either
other than to say that I know that he was still there in 1914.
If anyone has any directories that could expand on the knowledge of his time at the Miners Arms
pub I would be most grateful to know about it please.
Thank you.

Hi Brock,
Perhaps you could check out licencee records with the Staffordshire Archives. That should give you a more accurate idea as directories record information provided by a "closing date" of up to a year previous.

Hitchmough's Black country Pubs (which is on CD) is a summary of information from various sources. He has Henry as leaving in 1928, with James Enoch Ellis taking over in 1928. His start date is not so good. He has a record in a 1912 directory as being there (though directory years are publishing date and information can have been collected somewhat earlier, though for a date as late as 1912 I would think it applied to up to a year before) The census information does not seem to have been included. Before this mention the next landlord back listed is Job Allen who, again is listed in a directory in 1900. however I have a Kellys of 1904 which lists him as a beer retailer at 56 Owen St.
Apparently it was earlier (1872) called the Round of Beef, held a beer and wine licence. The licence renewal was objected to in 1903 as it was “dilapidated & insanitary (dirty & smelt of sewer gas)” , but the licence was renewed 26th Feb. 1903. Possibly this was when Henry took it over, but this is speculation. The pub closed 1977 and was demolished 1980

Hi Brock,
If you 'google' - Miners Arms, Owen St. Tipton 1900's, the 3rd entry down is Hitchmough's Black Country Pubs.
Click on this and you will see a picture of The Miners Arms taken in 1986.
