Post From Ireland to Cleator Moor Cumberland

    Hi,

I have hit a brickwall trying to find where about in Ireland my GGrandparents came from. They came over for my GGrandfather William Burns b1845 to work in the Iron Ore mines. My GGrandmother Catherine Burns nee Doran b1851 had their oldest son Frances in Ireland b1868. The next child to be born was Rebecca but she was born in 1869 in Cleator Moor so they must have arrived about then. They went on to have another 9 children including my Grandfather (also William) all born in Cleator Moor. I have census from 1871 to 1891 which puts them in Cleator Moor, but cant find what happened to them after that, there's nothing on the 1901 or 1911 census. My Grandfather married my Grandmother in Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1911, but can't find them on the 1911 census either?

Ive read somewhere that a lot of those who came over to Cleator Moor from Ireland to work in the Iron mines would have came from the same county of Ireland. The same for the name Doran, that a lot of the Dorans would have lived in the same County of Ireland?

If anyone could shed any light on this I would be most grateful.

Mo, can you tell us about your grandmother? was she Theresa Woods or Hannah Curran, when was she born and where.
Of course, she may have been neither.
The 1911 census was on 2 April 1911 was the marriage before or after?

I did spot this family in 1901, everything sort of fits except the surname is not quite right.

William Bennett born abt 1845, Ireland, Iron Ore Miner
Wife Catherine born abt 1846, Ireland
Son, William James Bennett born about 1878 Cleator, Iron Ore Miner.

    Living at Duke Street, Cleator.

Close, but probably not close enough

Hi Mo. I'm presuming this is your family in the 1891 census.

    1891: Piece: 4318; Folio: 32; Page: 58
    2 Henry Street, Cleator
    William Burns 46, head, Ireland
    Catherine Burns 40, wife, Ireland
    Frances Burns 23, son
    Rebecca Burns 22, dau
    Mary Burns 20, dau
    Sarah Burns 18, dau
    Martha Burns 17, dau
    James Burns 16, son
    William Burns 14, son
    Elizabeth Burns 13, dau
    Catherine Burns 12, dau
    Susan A Burns 11, dau
    Miles Burns 7, son
    Julia A Burns 4, dau
    Thomas Kay 30, lodger
    Catherine Douglas 1, s dau

Then at the same address in 1901, this looks like some of the children of William and Catherine...

    1901: Piece: 4895; Folio: 155; Page: 47
    2 Henry Street, Cleator
    Mary Marney 28, head
    William J Marney 5, son
    Mary F Marney 2, dau
    Catherine Marney 1, dau
    Catherine Burns 20, sister
    Julia Burns 14, sister
    Miles Burns 16, brother
    Casy Burns 11, sister
    All born in Cleator Moor

Could their mother Catherine have died ...

    Death Sep 1899 Whitehaven 10B 455
    BURNS, Catherine
    Age: 50

I have the same question for you as Mutley, whom did your Grandfather marry in 1911?

    Hi there,

is this William and Catherine's marriage?

William BYRNE age 21 single (father Frank) m Catherine DORAN 19 single (father Miles) 20 April 1865, Enniscorthy, Wexford, Ireland [M70233-9]

Catherine's age is slightly out compared with what you have, but there could be a number of reasons for that.

    and there's this:

Francis BYRNE birth 12 Feb 1866 Enniscorthy, Wexford, Ireland. Parents William BYRNE and Catherine DORAN [C70128-4]

You may find the book Sources for Irish Family History to be useful.

My ancestors (Breen, McIlheron) came over to work in Whitehaven and Workington from County Down but they married O'Donnells from Donegal. However, there were a lot of emigrants from Down as it was nearest, cicilysmith

    Hi Mutley,

Thank you for your reply. My Grandmother was Hannah Curran who married my Grandfather William Burns in the second quarter A,M,J in 1911 at Newcastle Upon Tyne. I have census for her aged 21 on the 1901 census in Blaydon, Durham, but nothing for 1911. They lived in Newcastle Upon Tyne I believe from that date, certainly from when my father William was born in 1912.
