Colenso surname confusion!

Hi All,

You have all been so helpful to me in the past, so I figured you may be able to help with this one too.

I am researching my husbands side of the family tree.
I know that the surname Colenso was a given name to many of my father in laws relatives, and I have been fairly successful in going back through as they tended to stay in the same area after 1750.

My problem is I have 2 references to the same person, but they are both on a different family line.

John Colenso (Penzance, Cornwall) 1548-1586 married a Jane, this then shows an Alan 1553- 1597 who also married a Jane, further down the family tree each person has a Samuel May Colenso (Penzance, Cornwall) 1786-1866 marrying a Mary Veale Thomas, only one of these can be right but I am unable to locate which one it is.

Anyone able to help? Thanks in advance.

Have you searched aspects of Cornish parish records? Also 1841/51 censuses? May help to sort the two Mary Beales into one twice subscribed.

There is only the one Mary Veale Thomas, married to only one John May Colenso. The problem is that the tree is showing me that John May Colenso is showing as the son of 2 brothers, Thomas Colenso (1580) and John Colenso (1581).
