Hi All,
I hope I can get an answer here as I have looked at this for months and I'm getting nowhere.
A merchant ship the "Zephir" arrived in Sydney on 5th Sept 1868. Master NA OOstrum (transcribed incorrectly as Vostrum). Able Seaman F Lange 4th from bottom of crew list, is said to be native of "Harland" by Stettin, Germany. I would love someone, if they could to have a look at the word "Harland" for me. I don't believe that the word starts with an "H" but think that it could be a "W". There are other names on the list starting with that identical letter but transcribed as "w" There is no such place on old maps as well as modern maps of the area by the name "Harland" but I have found a place called "Weilen" with a dot above the "n"(what does that mean) It is close to the old Stettin now called Szczecin, Poland. Or am I completely off target. The list can be found by just googling "Zephir" 1868 or mariners and ships in australian waters. The ship arrived again in April 1869, same crew, but it only gives his native place as Germany.
His application for naturalisation states that he was born in Stettin in 1844 and that he arrived in Australia from London in 1870 but does not recall the name of the ship. I can only find him on those two trips.
Thanks to anyone who can figure out that name!!!! and those that try. His full name is Ferdinand F F Lange.
Sue

Certainly looks like a 'W'. Check out Westphal, 4th name down the list.
Also check Honkenhagen 4 up from Warland.Happy Families

Sue, I've been pottering about looking for Harland which seems to be well represented in Austria. He was said to have come from Harland 'by' (via) Stettin.
Ancestry has several mentions of a Ferdinand or F.Lange one such:
1895 Sommerfield 13 Jan.

Better maybe the chap in Minnesota- Ferdinand F.Lange c 1859 on Minnesota & state census. Sadly I don't have access now.Happy Families

Thanks for your endeavours, Waitabit, unfortunately the Ferdinand Lange on your unassisted passenger list is not mine. Nor is any of the 1000 plus that went to South Australia. I believe that his name is as common in Germany as William Willams is in Wales(yes we have one of those) I would really love to know the name of that place on the crew list so I hope someone out there may have some knowledge of Germany pre the Polish takeover of parts of it, and be able to figure out the complete word. It is definately not Harland. Our Ferdinand was married in 1871 by the infamous Rev William Bailey who served time for unlawful marriages. Niether Ferdinand nor his wife had documentry evidence of their ID. So were married by stat decs. SAG has William Bailey's records to April 1871, Ferdinand married in August of that year so chances are I will never find anything more than what I already have. Thanks for the try.
Thanks again

HI Sue, I don't know if you have had a look at the Trove website from the National Library (address below) there quite a few articles for the Lange family, and there is a Golden wedding anniversary in the The Sydney Morning Herald Wednesday 31 August 1921 page 10.

After months of having this put in the "too hard basket", I woke this morning with a brain snap....could you be right "waitabit" in post #3. Off to the computer and found that little place in Austria "Harland". Good old Google earth found it very close to a town by the name of "Amstretten" So it is not "Harland by Strettin", Germany, but "Harland by Amstretten", Austria.
Could this be what I'm after????? If so then thank you all. So now will have to work on that.
