Does anyone have any old pictures of Coppice Street in Tipton that they might share with me please? I have many ancestors who used to live in Coppice Street & I would love to see what the street looked like to imagine what they saw all around them.
Thank you.

Have you tried your local library as they often have books on surrounding areas.
Or you could try Waterstones/W.H.Smiths.
They usually stock books showing 'old' pictures of places under Local Interest section.
Perhaps your local store might have one or you could ask them to order one for you.

I had the very same thought last night & I have now ordered a book off the internet. I have no idea whether the book will include anything about Coppice Street but it will still be worth every penny even it it isn't included to learn about the area in general where so many of my ancestors came from.
Thank you for your reply, it's much appreciated.

I'll have a look in Dudley library as they sometimes have surrounding areas/towns.
The ones I've got at home are very interesting showing the town as it was, the people (sometimes you're lucky to find a picture of a distant relative which is fantastic) and a good description of the area so I hope you're lucky with the one you've ordered.

Have you looked at GenUKI, in particular the bibliography on the Tipton page?If anyone can recommend any other good books about old Tipton
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/Tipton/index.html
Also ask at the relevant record office who often have a good collection of old photographs. Phone followed up by visit as necessary.

As Peter has says above - the relevant records for Tipton are held by Sandwell MB at Smethwick Library.
Give them a call - you might be lucky to find that they have got photos of Coppice St. Have 'googled' it on the map but it looks quite modern nowadays.

Dudley Library has only 1 book on Tipton - A History of Tipton by John Parkes 1915.
It mentions 'early' families: Dudleys/Whorwoods/Nightingales and has bmd's for them from the 1500's and a brilliant Pedigree Family Tree of the Dudleys which would be of enormous help to anyone tracing that family. There's a Gervase Paganel who founded The Priory in 1161 and there are still 2 streets named after him today.
The only thing I can see for Coppice St is The Saxhorn Inn, mentioned under Public Houses Past and Present. In Owen St leading off Coppice St there are 7 Public Houses...lol
If you can give me any surnames you're after I'll have a look to see if they're in the book.
I would definitely give Smethwick Library a call - they've helped me in the past and are very helpful.

Many thanks for all of the great advice which I shall follow up on.
The family line that I am trying to look into in Tipton is Ward. They seem to have been very numerous in & around Tipton so I have a good number of them to look into. A good number of them lived as neighbours all along Coppice Street so they certainly were a very close family, quite literally!
Thanks again,
Jan.

Hi Jan,
Sorry - there are no Wards in the book - typical isn't it?
If you can catch a train from New St. Birmingham to Smethwick Rolfe St (10 minute journey at the most) you can see Smethwick Library from the train - just across the road from the station.
Sorry I can't be of any more help - hope you find what you're looking for.
Good luck!
Sheila
