Tony - if you want to delve further into the life of your publican ancestor, you may find this to be rather useful.

Yes, £2650 is a tidy sum even nowadays. He was previously a confectioner. In the 1871 census, one year before his mariage, he was lodging with another confectioner family (Elstons) up in Liverpool.

I have no Wills from that period so I've no idea where the money might have come from.

He could have had a mortgage. If may be worth trying to locate any surviving deeds for the property as bundles of deeds often include information about mortgages.

Ironically, I have another ancestor - Henry Woods (b. 1821 in Peasenhall, Suffolk) - who ran the Pool Inn, Pool Village, Church Gresely from sometime just before 1881 to his death in 1884. His widow, Jane Woods (formerly Phillips, nee Parker) continued to run it until her death in 1894.

The odd thing here is that Henry was previously a carpenter. He was living in Kensington when his first wife died and he re-married to Jane who was also widowed.

I don't know where they got the money but they both left London and married in Burton-on-Trent, and then took over the Pool Inn.

Some of their children ended up in Nottm after their deaths which is where I come in. I have quite a lot of info on this family if anyone has a connection, but sadly nothing about their money or why they moved to Staffs/Derbys.

...maybe there were simply lots on Inns around then, or maybe it's all in the genes :-)
