As I don't have access to census I've always used Family Search 'old site' to check the 1881 census - very easy and quick!
Now even when using 'old site' and clicking on census it goes straight to 'new site'. Then when you've found the person you're after you are re-directed to see the original image on Find My Past.
What a rigmarole! Why alter something that was working fine, and easy to use? Or is it just me?

Sheila, if you mean that you can't get the household details and the census reference number like you used to on 'old search', you can still get those details by clicking on the little downward arrow on the right-hand side of the entry.
You might be slightly pacified by knowing that you can access other England and Wales census years via the 'new' Family Search site. Start here https://www.
familysearch.org/
Scroll down to 'Browse by location', and select British Isles.
The various census are near the top of the page. You do need to note the number of transcriptions. Probably very few of the years are complete at the moment - including the 1881 census which is being re-indexed.
The nearest I can get to a list of the population of England in the various census is http://
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography_of_England
I assume that these numbers include the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
There's link at the bottom of the page to the demography of Scotland and Wales.

I knew there was a way back to the old site, but couldn't see it for looking.
Start here https://www.
familysearch.org/ and scroll down a bit.
On the right-hand side there's a box which says 'go to previous site'.
Click on 'advanced search', and you'll get the layout with All resources, Ancestral file, Census, etc down the left-hand side.

Yes but what happens when you click on Census?Click on 'advanced search', and you'll get the layout with All resources, Ancestral file, Census, etc down the left-hand side.
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it is!
PS All the 1881 census indexes (FMP, Ancestry) are supposed to be free.

Trust you to find a problem.

Admittedly, it's a bit limiting if you're searching for John Smith
, but you can use 'all resources', enter person's name, select birth/christening and year of birth, (+/- if wanted), England, and then you get a breakdown of entries in the 1881 census, pedigree resource file etc.

Hi All,
As Peter says '..when you click on census' this is when it takes you to 'new site'
I just think it's a long-winded way of doing it now compared to the 'old site' - I suppose I don't like changes but as with everything else, things are changing all the time, sometimes not for the better.
Think I'll have to stick with searching on FMP for 1881 in future.
Many thanks to you all for your suggestions - very much appreciated.
Sheila
