Hi All,
I have started researching my family history and have traced back to my 3X great grandad George Iddon born in Leyland Lancashire in 1815.
His chidlren where
Thomas Iddon - Born 1858
George Iddon - Born 1860
James Iddon - Born 1864 (My 2X great grandad)
Mary Iddon - Born 1865
Jane Iddon - Born 1872
William Iddon - Born 1875
My 2X greatgrandad moved to Co Durham (where i am from) in the late 1800's or early 1900's.
I have loads in info on my 2X great grandad, but its siblings decendants and his grandparents I am curious to find. They where all born in the Lancashire area and I under stand that area is full of Iddon's.
I understand the cricketor John "Jack" Iddon born 1902 had a father called Tom, unsure if that is my Thomas listed above.
Any help would be greatfully received.
Paul Iddon, Durham

According to Wisden, ‘Jack’ Iddon was born on 8th January 1903 although Wikipedia and Cricinfo have him born in 1902. As the GRO indexes also say 1903 I’m minded to go with the later date!
He was born in Mawdesley and his father Thomas was a professional with Lancashire CCC. This leads nicely to the 1901 census where Thomas and his wife Susannah are living in School Lane, Mawdesley [RG13 Piece 3940 fol. 57 p. 21].
In 1911 they are living in New Street, Mawdesley with their children John, age 9; Ellen, age 5; Elizabeth, age 3; Eva, age 1 month. Thomas is now working as a basket maker. [RG 14 PN25229 SN126].
Thomas appears to be living in New Street, Mawdesley, in the 1891 census [RG12 Piece 3427 fol. 40 p. 12] and in the 1881 census [RG11 Piece 4222 fol. 54 p. 28].
At a first look, it doesn’t appear as though ‘Jack’ is directly related to your family but there could well be a connection somewhere.malcolm99

The 1871 census shows the family living in Gullet, Aspull, Lancs. Their surname has been wrongly written as HIDDON. [RG10 Piece 3882 fol. 84 p. 36]. Aspull is just ales than a mile from Haigh where James & Mary Ann were born (1881 Census).
The 1861 census shows the family living in Union Street, Leyland [RG9 Piece 3116 fol. 52 p. 14].malcolm99

It looks as though George and Ann were living in Union Street, Leyland in the 1851 census: HO107 Piece 2262 fol. 342 p. 10 – although this might need some double-checking.
I'm pretty sure that Ann was born in EUXTON near Leyland and not Everton as some of the later census give it.
Addition: ...and don't be surprised if her name turns out to be Grace Wiggans - but more digging will need to be done to confirm this.malcolm99

George Iddon senior died in Wigan Registration District in December Quarter 1885, aged 68. His burial is recorded on this site:
http://www.
lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html
Ann Iddon was living with her son George in Heyes Square, Aspull in the 1891 Census [ RG12 Piece 3047 fol. 17 p. 25] but seems to have died in Wigan RD in June Quarter 1891 aged 64. Her burial is also recorded on the Lancashire OPC site.
Mary Ann seems to have married John Wignall in April 1887 – see the Lancashire OPC site.malcolm99

In the 1891 Census Jane is a servant in a pub in Scholes Street, Wigan: RG12 Piece 3049 fol. 141 p. 18 and I suspect that she married Alfred Green in Pemberton in March 1885 – see Lancashire OPC website.
It’s interesting that the entry does not give a name for the bride’s father (see #3).malcolm99

I suspect William Iddon in the 1881 Census married Mary Jane Pilkington in Wigan RD in Dec Q 1899. They are in the 1901 Census in Quaker’s Yard, Standish: RG13 Piece 3547 fol. 15 p. 22 – FMP has William as 85 years old, but he isn’t really! (& Ancestry spells his name IDDEN).
In 1911 they are in Heaton Street, Standish with 3 sons: RG14 PN22951 SN249malcolm99
