Hi everyone.....Does anyone have any info on Sidney Road School in Hackney. I have a relative who was admitted in April and Nov 1883. All the children in my info are boys. Was it part of the Workhouse or was it an actual school? Thankyou

Thanks Daft Bat..... I had looked at the Hackney Workhouse site and come to the conclusion that Sidney Road School was part of it. The only thing I can't quite get my head round is this....the relative I found was at the school in 1883 (age 9). He was 'emigrated' to Canada from Shaftesbury House in 1888. His Father had remarried in 1882, had another son in 1886, who he bizarrely names the same as the first one, and in 1893 this son is also admitted to Sidney Road School although his sisters aren't. I've mega checked all my info and it's all correct. Thats why I wondered if Sydney Road School was part of the Workhouse.

I'm not sure about that!I had looked at the Hackney Workhouse site and come to the conclusion that Sidney Road School was part of it.
Have a look at the catalogue...
LCC/EO/DIV04
Scope - Content:
Records of the London County Council Education Officer's Department, comprising log books for the following schools in the Hackney, Shoreditch and Stoke Newington areas: ...Sidney Road School...
That suggests to me that Sidney Road School was under the management of the LCC Education Department and not of the Board of Guardians.
To my mind, the content of the registers confirms it.
Children from the Cottage Homes probably attended. If you browse through the registers you may be able to confirm that.
What does the register show for your ancestor in terms of parent/guardian and home address?

It seems that Sidney Road school was not part of the workhouse but was a Board school which opened in 1882. At that time it had 471 girls and 634 infants. Boys appear to have been admitted in 1883.
See: http://www.

According to this 1908 map the Board school was on the opposite side of the road from the workhouse (i.e. the ‘Infirmary’) between Sidney Road and Swinnerton Street>

You are all AMAZING.....thankyou so much for your input. 1891 census has the family at 49 Sidney Road (so near the school), 1901 at 325 Wick Road. School records at Sidney Road School for 1st son have 86 Hassett Road (Nov 1883).

Sidney Street School
I have just joined this site and am fascinated by the conversation about Sidney Street School, as I've just discovered that an ancestor of mine was admitted there on the 22nd July, 1883. In 1884, as a toddler, she'd spent a few weeks in the St. Leonard's, Shoreditch Workhouse & infirmary, as her father had recently died, leaving her mother with 5 small children and another on the way. At that time, the elder children were taken into care at the Harold Court (Brentwood) School. Any additional information you can find about either of these schools would be gratefully welcomed.
