Today's Guardian reports the discovery of a collection of 300 or so 19th century photographs of Newcastle and other parts of the north-east. Just 13 of them can be seen in the gallery here:

Francis Frith also produced some wonderful photographs from 1855, when he started his photography business, to when he died in Cannes in 1898. His views of Northumberland, including Newcastle, are available from our sponsors, Parish Chest.
