    Default James HAGGAR

    Hi all,

I'm looking the parents of James Haggar, James and Martha

What I know - James Haggar born 1818 in Great Chesterford, Essex and died 1902 in Bombala, NSW
Arrived in Australia on the 'Anglo Saxon' on 25 Oct 1854 with family

He married Mary Cewel in Dec 1839 in Great Chesterford, Essex. She was born 1816 in Debden, Essex and died 1894 in Bombala
Her parents were William and Sarah. Can you find them as well?

Possible death for James in the Saffron Walden district (which covers Gt Chesterford)...

    DEATH Mar 1848 Saffron Walden 12 194
    HAGGER, James

Martha is more difficult as there are these two possibilities...

    DEATH Sep 1855 Saffron Walden 4A 218
    HAGGAR, Martha

    DEATH Sep 1857 Saffron Walden 4A 236
    HAGGER, Martha

Further to the above, there are corresponding burial records for the two Martha HAGGERS on the pay/subscription site findmypast. I suspect the 1857 death may be the correct one, but I would recommend you check out the burial records. There is also a corresponding burial record for James HAGGER.

While there, you should check out the marriage of James HAGGER at Gt. Chesterford in 1806.

Just as a point of interest, for many generations, the HAGGER family farmed Overhill Farm, just outside Ashdon, which is 5 miles from "Bunkum", as Saffron Walden was known. My great grandfather, John Smith (!), worked for them.

Thank you for that find :-)
One family tree had the name CEWEL, while another had COWELL. Didn't know which to choose.

Okay... I admit it.... I have COWELLs in my tree from this neck of the woods - no connection that I can see to yours, yet.

However, with the flat Essex accent of days gone by and people writing what they heard, rather than there being any spelling conventions, you may need to look at COWL as well.

    HI

Yes James was baptised at Great Chesterford in 1819 to James & Martha. I believe he probably had 5 siblings from 1810 to 1824.

James and Martha Beckerby or Beckway married at Great Chesterfod in 1805 or 1806. I believe Mary James wife was Cowel.

In 1841 I think James nad Mary were living in Little Chesterfod with a six month old son William

    Thanks for the update Peter.

I also think that Mary's surname was COWELL/ COWEL and not CEWEL as someone had transcribed.
I'll check out the info you gave me
