In 1871 I have a lady named Maria Miller age 17 and single. In 1881 I have the same lady now named Morley and a widow. She had no children during her biref marriage
How do I find her husband?

Hi, Colin.
Umm, a location hint would help. You could search the BMD indexes for a Morley-Miller marriage between 1871 and 1881, and likewise for Morley deaths in the same time frame. Did Maria marry later in life? If so, the documentation about her next marriage may mention her first husband's name. Oh, and one more thing. In the 1881 census, can you see her neighbors? She may be located near her Morley in-laws, which would be a hint to finding the deceased son/brother.

If all you have is a couple of census returns, all you can say is that there is no child living with her in 1881. She may have had a child who died before 1881 or is living elsewhere. She had no children during her biref marriage

In case it helps anyone in the search, I think the Maria in question is in the 1881 census at RG 11/1004, f.21, p.36. The census transcript on FamilySearch has 27 year old Maria Morley (born Lambeth) with her father Joseph W. Miller (58, born Sheerness, Kent) at the Harp Hotel, Strond Street, Dover. Joseph was the hotel proprietor.

1891 lists her as Marley.

Still no joy with the elusive Mr Morley, I'm afraid, Colin.

In case you don't already have it, here's a web page about the Harp Hotel:
http://www.
dover-kent.com/Harp-Hotel.html
including a report of an 1890 fire mentioning Mrs Morley and a Miss Miller. According to a list given there, Mrs Maria Morley was licensee from January 1888 (by which time her father was dead) to 1895.

There is a public tree on Ancestry.
Lena Alice married George Sidney Herbert Bird in Oct 1891 at Dover.
There are very nice pictures of Lena, Maria and their father Joseph William.
According to their tree Joseph married Sarah 1, had Joseph and Maria, then married Sarah 2 and had Frank, Walter and Lena.
However, though they have a picture of Maria they have not tied her to a Morley/Marley.
I cannot find that marriage anywhere.

Scenario maybe:
Maria met a ? Morley, got pregnant, lived with Mr Morley as husband and wife..child and/or Mr Morley died..or child died and Mr Morley moved on...
I know my Gran never married but had 3 children ( no father on any birth certs) and changed her surname after the first to what we assume was my grandads fathers surname..and became a widow at the time of completing the census..

This is going to sound crazy but I would like 'forget' for the moment the elusive Mr. Morley that married[?] Maria Miller - OK?
If so, and on this thread, because there is a slim possibility of a connction, I want to concentrate on anothrt person named Morley. Her name was also Maria and she married a 1st cousin 4X removed of mine on 27 July 1873.
Is this pemissable or should I start afresh with a new thread?
