    Default 1871 census image check?

Could someone please check the following image for me?
I want to know the marital status of Lydia Wright, who I expect to be sister to Sarah since they have the same birthplace, and I haven't a certain maiden name.

    Thanks,
    ChristineR

    Hi Christine,

As best I can read it, Lydia was a widow. It could be a "U" rather than a "W", but elsewhere on the page "Unm" is used for Unmarried. She is listed as Sister, but that should make her the sister of William, the Head of Household.

It looks like a W to me. On the 1861 census, if I have looked right, Lydia was with her husband Francis both servants.
Have you not been able to locate a birth certificate for one of their children to confirm Sarahs maiden name?

    Thanks Peggy and Jo,

I have since been given those 1861 details, so it would appear that Lydia is widowed in 1871. I 'presume' she is sister to Sarah, not the head, because they were both born Sproughton, Suffolk, and I am not aware of William having a sister called Lydia. I have seen baptisms on the LDS film for Great Oakley and St Nicholas Harwich for 10 children from 1817 - 1834, no Lydia.

Since it is the wife of a 2nd great grand uncle, I haven't considered buying a certificate to find her maiden name. On FreeBDM a possible marriage for William and a Sarah JOHNSON showed up in Ipswich reg district, Suffolk in Dec q 1846, but after the first child was baptised in Harwich. They didn't marry in Harwich, but at the time I had the film I didn't realise how close Dovercourt was and didn't really look much at it as I ran out of time.

Thanks again, both of you, for your help
