hello, I am researching the family's Kent, and Chater I know that a John Kent married a Annie Chater, 21.03.1867, Leicester,, have their marriage certificate. It states that both their fathers, John Kent snr, and James Chater, were Watermen,but I cannot seem to be able to find either families anywhere on the 1841/51/61 censuses. I have gone forward ok, Have you come across them by any chance.The marriage cert: says that John was 25yrs, and Annie 22yrs at time of marriage, and I know he became a Waterman too.as did there sons John and William, One of there boats was "5mothers & Harriett."
Would be very grateful of anything you may have come across regarding these families.
Mary

Hello Mary, and welcome to the forums

Rather than have your post tacked onto the end of an old thread, I have started a new thread for you.
Have you found John and Annie in any census after their marriage, with places of birth? If you can post the census details it will be easier for our members to help you.

After quite a search I think I may have found part of the family in 1871 in Leicester - RG10/3286 fol. 81 p. 24
This may help checking earlier censuses:
James Chater, head, 65, canal waterman, born Oldbury Staffs
Presilla Chater, wife, 54, canal waterman, born Oldbury Staffs
James Chater, son, 23, widower?? , canal waterman, born Oldbury Staffs
Hannah Kent, visitor, 25, married, canal waterman, born Oldbury Staffs
John Kent, visitor’s son, 3, born Leicester

A printed volume of Oldbury’s Parish Registers doesn’t appear to list James Chater bap c1806.

I think this is James's marriage to Priscilla, just a few miles from Oldbury;
James CHATTER/ Priscilla HOLLOWAY 29 Aug 1825 St John, Halesowen, Worcestershire [103890-1]
and there are five baptisms for children of theirs at Oldbury, Worcs, from 1829- 1841. Nothing late enough for Annie/ Hannah though.

There is a Priscilla Chater aged 10 working as a house servant in Berkhamsted in 1851 HO107/1716 fol. 92 p.10 She was born in Oldbury and is probably the daughter of John and Priscilla (she’s on Family Search baptised 12 Dec 1841). Berkhamsted is on the Grand Junction Canal.
There is also a marriage of Priscilla Chater in Leicester RD Sep Q 1866 which could be her.
