    Default rintels in england

Through a marriage in Melbourne Australia in 1849 i am connected with the Rintel family in England. There
was Meir/Myer Rintel who was a Hebrew author in London before leaving for Edinburgh in 1817 to become
rabbi there He had three sons Moses , Joseph and Hyam. Moses was the reader at the Brighton synagogue
before coming to Sydney Australia in 1844. There he began the first Jewish school in Australia, before
going to Melbourne where he was the first rabbi of the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation . He married my
ancestor Elvina Hart in 1849 and died in 1880. Joseph was the rabbi at Falmouth from 1832 to 1849. Hyam
i believe came to Australia with Moses. Joseph is shown as being born in Hamburg Germany in 1810. Myer
is shown as being born in Prussia. If anyone is researching the rintel family i would like to hear from them.

    Thanks

Do you have a source for Meir being Rabbi in Edinburgh in 1817?

I have severel scources for believing that. In chapter 13 of the Susser Archives Meir Rintel(Hacohen) is mentioned as a
Shochetim at the Great Synagogue of London where he was a protege of Rabbi Solomon Hirschell in 1817. In an account of the
life of Solomon Bennet(1761-1838) Meir Rintel is shown as leaving London and going to Scotland around 1817. In The Origons
of Scottish Jewery by A Levy he is presumed to be the first reverend of the then newly established Edinburgh Synagogue.

On Saturday last in the Pudding Chare, in this town, according to the rites of the Jewish Church, Mr Michael Alexander Fles, quill merchant, to Miss Wilhemina Myers. The Jewish Priest, Myers Moses Rintel, late of Edinburgh, performed the ceremony. A very neat altar was erected in the room on the occasion, and a large party was present

It was ASSUMED Rintel fled to Scotland in 1817 but there is no proof he was there until 1823. Bennett simply said he had "fled the country on Feb. 15, 1818". Does Scotland count as 'fleeing the country' ? And why no reference in Scotland until 1823?

    Michael,
You do raise some valid points. Did "fleeing the country" mean leaving England or Britain totally? And if he was not in
Edinburgh before 1823 where was he?The fact that he was in Newcastle in 1828 is news to me. Some more digging to be done.
Myer was born in Hamburg in Hamburg Germany in 1785 and Joseph , Moses brother was born there in 1810, so perhaps he went backthere for some time.

    Thanks
    Peter

    Hi Peter

I think we have had a similar conversation on another site/forum. Joseph and Moses were NOT brothers. They had totally different fathers. I believe Susser (who used Cecil Roth as his source) and Roth were wrong.

For a more accurate background on Joseph who was in Falmouth see "The Jews of Falmouth—1740-1860" By Alex M. Jacob.

    http://www.jhse.org/book/export/article/15939

    It includes the note:

"Ministers at Falmouth include :—(a) “Rabbi Saavill” (Samuel ben Samuel ha-Levi), died
    22nd March 1814; (b) Moses (the Precentor) ben Hayim, died 24th October 1832; (c)
    Joseph Benedict Rintel (born 1810) son of Benedict Jacob Rintel, at Falmouth, c. 1832-1849;
    (d) Rev. N. Lipman, subsequently Chief Shochet in London. Between 1821 and 1829,
Barnet Asher Simmons, Minister at Penzance from 1811 to 1853, circumcised seven children
of members of the Falmouth Community. Simmons married Flora Jacob (1790-1874)
grand-daughter of Zender Falmouth. Their daughter Fanny married J. B. Rintel."

And if you want to be 100% sure about any Rintel family connections I suggest you order copies of Joseph Rintel's Naturalisation documents from the National Archive:

    Reference HO 1/101/3629
Naturalisation Papers: Rintel, Joseph, from Hamburg. Certificate 3629 issued 30 August 1861.

As well as the certificate there should be background papers and the file should provide the exact date and place of birth, the names of his parents and his wife and children.

If you DO order the documents (I highly recommend it) I would be interested to hear what they contain.

    Regards

    Michael
