Marriages in Clifton, Bristol

Hi,

I am researching a Richard FLORIDA born circa 1820 in Newport, Mons. He was a gardener and from census records seems to have married several times and lived in Bristol.

The GRO indexes give the following marriages for a Richard FLORIDA and I am trying to ascertain whether they are all the same man. Funds are pretty limited so I cannot afford to purchase all the certificates (6 of them) but wonder whether anyone has church records for Clifton that cover the period - this assumes that they were church weddings of course.

The index entries are are as follows:

Sep 1841 - Newport, Mons
Jun 1851 - Clifton
Jun 1859 - Clifton
Mar 1861 - Clifton
Dec 1867 - Clifton
Sep 1878 - Newport, Mons

The Newport to Clifton and then back again ties in with census records and there are possible matches on the census's for spouses amongst the names on the same pages of the index.

The 1867 marriage is to Emma Wotton but the others are awaiting partners.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated,

Marriage Mar 1861, Richard Florida to Charlotte Buston, Clifton, 6a/228.

1861 census has Richard Florida lodging with James and Emma Bellamy in Bristol Gloucestershire along with Charlotte his wife, his children George and Ann and his step children James and Mary Butson [sic].

Forgot to mention, in the above post #3, Sarah is daughter of Richard & William is his Grandson.

1891 William, an ag.lab. is with Aunt & Uncle Henry & Ann M.Weston in Christchurch Monmouthshire.

FamilySearch has these two baptisms at Easton St Mark, Gloucs:
- Ann Maria, dau. of Richard & Mary Floriday, bapt. 21 Nov. 1852
- Tom, son of Richard & Mary Floriday, baptised 1 January 1855

which fits with these birth registrations from FreeBMD:
- Ann Maria Florida, birth registered Q4 1852, Clifton district
- Tom Florida, birth registered Q1 1855, Clifton district

There's a death registration for Tom Florida, Q1 1855, Clifton district
and one for Mary Floriday, Q1 1857, Bristol district

which would fit with Richard being free to marry again in 1859. However, since ages aren't given in the death index at this time, we can't be sure that this is an adult Mary. You'd need to get the death certificate to find out more.

If Richard's wife at this time was called Mary, that rules out only one of the women on the list of potential spouses for the Q2 1851 marriage as the other three were all Mary or Mary Ann (the names are Mary Ann Chandler, Mary Ann Guest, Sarah Vaughan and Mary Waugh). If you can pair up any of these Marys with one of the other men on the list (Thomas Hand, George Sheppard, Charles Uran Trim) it would eliminate them from the inquiry.

Thanks for the replies - all very helpful. There is a Mary Florida burial Familysearch in St George, Bristol on 3 Jan 1857 which says she was aged 38 so this is probably Richard's wife who I think was nee WAUGH.

What I think I have so far is:

Jun 1851 - Clifton - Mary WAUGH
Jun 1859 - Clifton
Mar 1861 - Clifton - Charlotte BUSTON
Dec 1867 - Clifton - Emma WOTTON
Sep 1878 - Newport, Mons

So only two more to go. For the 1859 one there are only two possible partners listed on the GRO indices - Mary BROADBEAR and Sarah DODGE and for the 1878 in Newport there is an Elizabeth HALLS only.

Musdt do bit more digging to proove they are all the same Richard though,
