I have a real conundrum. I have 2 different 1911 census's with these families:
a)
Joseph Fowler Age 25 Born Aston married 4 years
Rosiena Emily Fowler Age 23 Born Aston
Rosiena Elizabeth Fowler Age 2 Born Aston
Living Wheeler Street, Aston.
b)
Mr J Fowler Age 27 Born Erdington married 3 years
Mrs R Fowler Age 25 Born Castle Bromwich
Joseph H Fowler Age 2 Born Erdington
Living Kingsbury Road, Erdington
The problem is, 1 Joseph Age 27 or 25 is my Grand Uncle but which one? His father was living in Erdington since about 1886, as was his widow on the 1911 census so I go for family "b".
The only marriage I can find between a J Fowler and an R is Sept Qtr 1907 in Aston - Joseph and Roseina Emily Clemmens.
I suppose the only way is to order one or other Birth or Marriage Cert?

The only sure way is to purchase a certificate. However, the 1901 census records for both Joseph's should clarify the situation somewhat. The first Joseph shows his birthplace as Aston and the 1901 census of Aston shows the following:
RG13/2882, folio 144, page 10
12 James Street
Josiah FOWLER Head M 49 Iron Moulder Birmingham
Elizabeth do Wife M 50 do
Mary A do Daur S 22 do
Joseph do Son S 15 At the Printing Warwick Aston
George do Son S 12 do do
The second J Fowler is in the 1901 census of Erdington as follows:
RG13/2875, folio 13, page 18
4 Bromford Lane
Henry FOWLER Head M 55 Labourer at Wire Mills Warwicks Warwick
Sarah M do Wife M 53 do Birmingham
Ebenezer do Son S 22 Labourer do Erdington
John E do Son S 20 Cycle Tube Maker do do
Joseph do Son S 17 Cycle Maker do do
Thomas do Son S 15 Errand Boy do do
Ada do Grand daughter 2 do Birmingham
Presumably the latter family is your direct line. Another pointer, could the Joseph H in the second 1911 census record stand for Joseph Henry?
There is another marriage registration on the GRO Index via Ancestry for a Joseph FOWLER in the Dec qtr 1907 at Aston, vol 6d, page 560 but one female name is missing from the page - could this be the marriage for the second Joseph on the 1911. Do check the page number before ordering as it is somewhat indistinct.

Thanks Janet, yes I'm now pretty certain that the 2nd one is correct. I appreciate your efforts and getting back so quickly.
