    Default Captain Francis Harbin 1700

Hello, does anyone have any information on a Captain Francis Harbin that came from Dorest, Charminster, England and settled in Maryland. He died in 1733 and owned, The Gleaning. It was a plantation in Prince George county, Maryland. This part of the country is now Washington D.C.
    Thank you

Hello Michael and welcome to the forum

Dorset is well covered on Ancestry, with both parish registers and probate records online. The collections that may be of most interest to you are 'Dorset, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812' and 'Dorset, England, Wills and Probates, 1565-1858'.

Some wills for Dorset Harbins were proved in the Archbishop of Canterbury's court, the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC). There are a couple of Charminster ones, a 1683 one for John Harbin, miller, and a 1598 one for another John Harbin, yeoman, too early to link in with Francis (if 1700 is his birthdate) but they may be helpful in figuring out family connections. They can be downloaded from the Documents Online website for £3.50 each:

    nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/wills.asp

There's also the Dorset Online Parish Clerks website at

    http://www.
    opcdorset.org/

which I see includes Charminster marriages going back to 1561.

There are some baptisms here for Charminster Harbins, transcribed from the British Isles Vital Records Index:

Ancestry has some original Dorset parish registers available to view and there was a Francis Harbin who married an Elizabeth Smith on 15 December 1681 in Poole. They had a son Francis baptised 31 March 1691 (born 17 March), also in Poole.

There was an earlier baptism of a Mary Harbin on 12 March 1677 in Dorchester Holy Trinity - her father was shown as Francis Harbin.

Do you have any idea how old Francis was when he died?

Is there any connection with the William Harbin of Prince George('s) County, Maryland, who died in 1733, leaving one-sixth (50 acres) of 'a parcel of land being part of Tract of Land called the Gleaning lying on Goose Creek' to each of six sons (John, William, Elisha, James, Joshua and Edward Villias?

This information is taken from a transcript of his will given here:

    http://
    wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mrmarsha&id=I15235

which also says he was born in Yeovil, Somerset in 1675.

Numerous messages have been posted on other forums by "Joan Marie", who I gather also produces the 'Harbin Newsletter'. This one is interesting in that it suggests that Captain Francis Harbin 'apparently died in 1699' and is 'reportedly the parent of William in Prince George County d1733':

Perhaps your best bet is to try contacting Joan Marie via the e-mail address given in that post.

Hello again, I tried to contact Joan Marie but to no avail. Yes, William was Francis' son. I was trying to find more about the ship He was proprietor of called the Owner's Adventure.
    Thank you, Michael

There is reference to it on:
    http://www.
    dvrbs.com/camden-texts/CamdenNJ-CCHS-Upper410.htm

where it says "In September 1681 “Ye Owners Adventure”, a narrow sterned vessel known as a pink, set sail from Dublin with a number of colonists who would establish the town of Newton."

Is that the vessel to which you refer?
