Hi,
I live in Brisbane Australia and am currently researching my husband's family of Rigby/Goodwin/Kirkby/Robinson/Walkinshaw who were mostly coal miners from Midlothian Scotland.
...
Looking for Richard Kirkby, the natural father of Cornelius Short Goodwin b.5/10/1828 at Mumby Lincs. His motherr was Mary Goodwin who married Robert Short 24/12/1828.

As your enquiry into Richard KIRKBY appears to be separate from your Rigby/Robertson enquiry, do you want me copy the relevant part of your thread about Richard KIRKBY to a new thread? I could place it in the Lincolnshire forum or alternatively the Illegitimacy forum.
By the way, where did you get the birth date for Cornelius from, is this from a baptism entry? On checking FreeREG ...
Cornelius baptised on 26 Oct 1828 at St Peter and St Paul, Bratoft, Lincolnshire. Father Richard KIRKBY. Mother Mary GOODWIN. Father's occupation, Blacksmith
It might be worth looking for an bastardy bond/affiliation order, bearing in mind that since Mary GOODWIN married so shortly afterwards she may not have pursued the matter of support for her child. Another avenue would be to search the census for Richard KIRKBY, blacksmith.Last edited by olliecat; 20-02-2012 at 3:55 AM. Reason: tweaked

Thanks Ollicat,
Yes, Richard Kirkby is separate from Ann Robinson. ( only connection is that Cornelius Short Goodwin's dau. Lizzie married Ann Robinson/Rigby's son Peter Rigby in Brisbane in 1890 ) . Please a new thread for Richard Kirkby.
Birth date for Cornelius Short Goodwin is from another doing his research .
Cornelius Short Goodwin's mother, Mary Goodwin married Robert Short on 24.12.1828 and so the Short Goodwin name came about.

Do you access to the census? I can see one candidate for you in the 1841 and 1851 census. Richard KIRKBY (blacksmith) born abt. 1807 in Burgh, living at Sibsey in Lincolnshire. Note: Sibsey is about 18 miles from Bratoft, so not exactly next door.
1841: Piece: 644 Book/Folio: 2/21 Page: 7
1851: Piece: 2098 Folio: 515 Page: 27
His wife's name is Sarah and there was a marriage on 08 Apr 1830 at Sibsey between Richard KIRKBY and Sarah BRUMMITT. See FreeREG for the marriage...

Sibsey might not be next door to Bratoft, but Burgh (le Marsh) is.

Presumably this is the baptism of Richard, unless this one died, and then another baby was born and also called Richard. (I haven't checked any further through the register.) http://www.

Ah! about 2.5 miles apart.

An 80 year old John KIRKBY was in the 1841 census with Richard, so this looks good for his baptism.
Richard appears to have changed occupation from blacksmith to farmer by 1861.
1861: RG9; Piece: 2334; Folio: 23; Page: 5
1871: RG10; Piece: 3338 Folio: 22 Page: 4
Also, according to the National Probate Calendar, Richard KIRKBY of Sibsey died on 13 Aug 1880 and left a will which was proved on 28 Sep 1880; the executors were his sons Joseph and Henry KIRKBY.
If you think there is any mileage in this Richard as the father of Cornelius, then you may want to consider getting hold of a copy of his will, on the off-chance that Cornelius is mentioned. Having said that, perhaps it would be better to hold off for a while to see if anything else pops up on this thread.Last edited by olliecat; 20-02-2012 at 4:57 AM. Reason: added a bit
