And I'll leave RonOne to get on his bike.
Though I must give him credit for finding that marriage. Silly me didn't think that Joseph and Susan could have had other children earlier than 1820 and had them baptised in another parish. (According to my sources, Henry wasn't baptised in Dickleburgh.)
For a guess, this is the burial of Henry's first wife, Caroline, 17 May 1846.
(Care as there are two Henrys born 1816 in the 1841 census. Judging by the names of his children the Henry married to Helen is the son of Harcourt Howlett, and interestingly although (some of) that Henry's siblings seem to have been baptised in Dickleburgh, he himself wasn't.).

Burial of the Henry who married Caroline and then Mary Ann.
And huge apologies to judyg for crediting the find of the marriage of Henry and Mary Ann to RonOne and not her.
Not quite sure how I missed her post, but I reckon that between us we've sorted out Sandra's query. Even if we have given two of James' alleged children to someone else.

Baptism of Henry Howlett, parents Joseph and Susan, 22 Aug 1815 in Pulham Market (St Mary Magdalene).
(I'll leave the finding of the entry to RonOne.

Thanks Judyg, Pam and RonOne.
That is certainly Esther. The baptism records of Harriet and Elijah, 1868, name Mary Anne as the mother. So James must have married? Mary Ann sometime between 1853 and 1855 (if William is hers. trying to locate his details) or certainly 1860 and the birth of Eliza.
Ah well, more food for thought and trails to follow.

Hi Sandra,
The baptisms for William & Elijah in 1859 indicate that Mary was a single woman at the time. The notation in the margin stating that Mary Ann had married her brother-in-law are in a different hand and possibly notated at a different date. Seeing that she was already legally Mary Ann Howlett is it a possibility that they never actually wed? Hence the inability to locate a marriage.
Cheers
Judyg

Thanks Judyg, that helps clear up that a bit more. 'Married to brother in law' and shown as widow, although there is no record I can find of James marrying her, so maybe it 'just happened' though the note, as you point out, does say married.
More to find obviously.

Well, that just led to more questions.
Elijah Howlett and William Howlett, mother Marianne, widow, were both baptised on 24th July 1859.
Elijah Howlett was born Depwade, Norfolk Year : 1857 Quarter: Apr-May-Jun Vol no: 4B Page :220.
For William Howlett, there are 2 entries, both state born Depwade, Norfolk Year: 1854 Quarter:Apr-May-Jun Volume no: 4B Page nos: 233 and 231.
They are both on the same original page of the handwritten register.
Is there any way of finding out who the father is as they are not close enough relatives for me to purchase a certificate (I have decided I will only purchase all certificates of direct line only - and that keeps my gen allowance well skint already). As suggested, could be a William.
Nothing is mentioned on Register or Baptism record that I can see, but I would like to get the reference correct if possible.
Sandra whose spectacled aura says to just put both on the record.
