James Howlett married Esther Reeve on 21st May 1850 at All Saints Dickleburgh. It would appear that she died in 1853 ( 1853 Mar Q Vol 4B Page 174). She appeared as his wife in 1851 census.
In 1855, son William was born, followed by Elijah, 1859, Eliza, 1860 and Harriet,1861.
The 1861 census has James with wife Mary Anne, shown as aged 40, James as 32. By 1871, she had reverted to being 44, to his 46.
I can find a marriage for a James Howlett in Jun Q 1862 Depwade 4b 3(1?7?)3 but no wife (Free BMD & FMP) and another Dec 1863 Depwade 4b 607, but definitely no Mary Anne(only a Sophia and Sarah).
He must have married someone and someone must have been mother of the 4 children. The family has a long history of getting married in church even though there were fatherless children prior to a marriage, so I was thinking that a 'live together' marriage is probably not the case (although I know by now that I should never presume).
Would appreciate any thoughts.
Sandra whose spectacled aura is no help at all!

Hi Sandra, this sounds like a case of needing some certificates... I'd suggest getting at least one of the children's births and also the marriage and death. A marriage in 1862 sounds too early if Esther's (assumed) death is in 1853.

There are lots of instances of where marriages can't be backed up with a certificate, and there are lots of reasons for that. It could be something so simple as a registery entry being incorrect - I have an instance where one of my grandfather's siblings is shown as having a mother whose maiden name was Jones, when in fact it was Evans - in another case in my tree there is a marriage which was only found by persistant searching because the spelling of his surname was wrong.
If I was you I would acquire one of the childrens' birth certificates because that will give her maiden name.
However, there is a marriage of a James Howlett in 1856 registered in Erpingham. Norfolk. From the record it is not definitve as to who the bride is - there are 2 alternatives - but one of them is a Mary Ann Bane.

I don't know how much of a help this will be but http://tinyurl.com/74r2ofd
Scroll across to Dickleburgh, baptisms, 1844 -1911.
Image 2, last entry on page, and image 3 first entry on page.
Note what's written in the left margin. My reading of that is that William and Elijah were not James' children; and you need to find James' brothers and find which one of them married a Mary Ann(e)/Marianne.
Eliza and Harriett were baptised 16 Feb 1868 - image 15.
James' brothers would appear to be William baptised in 1820, and Charles in 1829. When James married Esther he said his father was Joseph, and when a Charles Howlett married Harriet Barber in Dickleburgh in 1857 (image 67 of marriages 1837-1901) he said his father was Joseph, which seems to leave William. I have allegedly checked without success Dickleburgh PRs both for a marriage for William and for death, but do check them yourself to be sure.
Added: Esther buried Dickleburgh, 4 Feb 1853. Image 44 of burials 1813-1862.
Further added: Care! There's another William Howlett baptised in Dickleburgh - in 1821. Looks as if he was illegitimate.

RonOne - stop following me around!

Back to Sandra's question and my ramblings in post #5:
Most likely marriage seems to be William Howlett and Mary Anne Mullan on the same page, December quarter 1851, Depwade registration district.

So I don't clash with RonOne because we both keep adding bits to our posts

Submitted entry on IGI - William Howlett and Mary Ann Mullan married 14 October 1851 in Bunwell.
Bunwell not in list of online registers. Bother!

On the 1851 Census there is a Mary Ann Howlett, widow with daughter Harriet with her parents William and Frances Moor (Moore) in Dickleburgh.
There does not seem to be a birth for Harriet Howlett but there is one for a Harriet Moore in the correct time frame.
On 23rd November 1846 there is a marriage for Mary Ann Moore daughter of William Moore and Henry Howlet (sic) son of Joseph Howlet. They married at All Saints Church, Dickleburgh.
Considering that on Elijah and William's baptismal records state that the mother of these children was married to her brother-in-law do you know if James had a brother Henry?
Cheers
