    FreeBMD has the birth registration of
    John Horlor, Abergavenny, Jun 1857, 11a 86

    Not far is Stowe, St Briavels. Have you considered this as a possibility?

    Re "deceased 1866". Do you mean "deceased" on the 1886 certificate - father's name not recorded?

    George W (why does that sound familiar!) Horlor's occp'n on the 1861 Census is "Carver's gilder".

    Do you have his father? Possibility -

    Bath Chronicle + Weekly Gazette, Thursday, 13 October 1825
    DIED - Sunday, Mr George Horlor, carver and gilder, of Westgate Street

    Thanks for this. I do believe his father was George and he was a carver and gilder so it all ties in. Great!

    George N Horlor, Lodger, Single, 20, Machine Paper Cutter, b. Stowe Monmouthshire
    (He's lodging with someone in the paper trade)

    1871 (RG10 3136 96 35)
    George Horlor, son, 9, born Stowe, Gloucester

    possibility?

    The 1871 household with George, age 9, also has a Henry Horlor, age 10, born Stowe, Glos.

    Shd have clicked before sending previous post - another senior moment!

    Thanks Helachau very interesting. When I looked the N I believe is actually an A wrongly transcribed. One stepfurther in solving my problem
