I am researching the Horlor family. I believe that George W Horlor born about 1806 in Bath was the father of Harry John Edwin Horlor born 1860 but have been unable to verify this. Can anyone help.
George W was married to Mary Ann and they had 2 children William Mortimer born 1829 and Ellen born 1843. there may be others I am not aware of. Mary Ann died in 1849
George W then married Amelia Atkins in 1850 and they had George Edward in 1852.
I would be interested in any further information about this family

the 1861 Census (RG09/106/36 page 4) for 6, Prospect Terrace, St Pancras shows Amelia, a Straw Bonnet Maker born in Ireland about 1832, as the daughter of George & Mary ATKINS. Also living with the family is a grandson George E. born in Islington about 1852.
Meanwhile George W., a Carver's Gilder is at 27, A Licensed Lodging House, Castle Street, St Andrew, London (RG09/218/85 Page: 17)

Harry doesn't seem too sure about where he was born: the free index at 1901 Census Online says 'Monmouths Stowe' but an 1891 transcript at hunimex.net/warwick/freecens/2423.html (put www. in front) says Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
The possible link with Cheltenham is interesting . . . 'British and Irish Paintings in Public Collections' by Christopher Wright and others (on Google Books) lists some works by George W. Horlor who is described as 'working Birmingham, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire & Brentford, Middlesex 1849-1891'.
This George Horlor seems to have come to a rather sad end:
Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper, 29 January 1899 (a Saturday)
'AN ARTIST'S DOWNFALL
There's a death registration for a 78 year old George William Horlor in the South Stoneham district in the first quarter of 1899. This would point to a d.o.b. of about 1820/21.
George William Horlor, stated to be an artist of some repute in the West of England, was, on Tuesday, found in a dying state on the floor of his bedroom at Southampton. He subsequently expired, and at the inquest on Thursday, the widow of the deceased said her husband had been reduced from affluence to poverty through drink. Years ago he could command 600 l. to 700 l. for a single picture, but at the time of his illness she had not the means to get a doctor. -- A verdict of "Death from natural causes" was returned.'
I don't have access to census returns to see whether this George is a likely candidate for Harry's father. And it's past my bedtime anyway, so I must go now.
P.S. What does Harry's marriage certificate say?
