Hi,
Does anyone know how to track down Orphanages in Kent around 1919.
My Grandmother was sent to one in 1919 when she was born but claimed she did not know her maiden name before getting married to her first husband. Until I can trace this information I cannot trace my family history any further back on her side
Any help would be very much appreciated
Kerry

What do you mean exactly? Her maiden name is the surname she used at the time of her first marriage. Maiden name and birth name are not the same thing. What does the certificate say?claimed she did not know her maiden name before getting married to her first husband
If you have the birth certificate, please tell us what it says. If you don't have the birth certificate you need to get a copy. The precise details of her birth have a bearing on where we might look for an orphanage. My Grandmother was sent to one in 1919 when she was bornPeter Goodey

Hi Peter,
My nan claimed she did not know her birth name or birth parents. And the only info i have is she lived in a orphanage in Kent until she was 15. At 21 she had my uncle and his name is Godfrey, he knows no details of his father.
Apoglogies for my lack of knowledge in this area but how do i get a copy of her certificate if i do not know her birth name?
When she married my grandfather she used the name"Godfrey " as her maiden name on this certificate and it doesn't list her fathers name
I am knew to this so would appreciate help to be pointed into the right area
Thank you
Kerry

A lot of people here will be happy to help but there isn't much anyone can do without knowing her name. I gather her surname was (or she went by the name of) GODFREY.
What were her full forenames?
Have you got her death certificate? If she died after 1969, what does it give as her date and place of birth?Peter Goodey
