I have hit a brickwall searching for Jane Stevenson's birth.
Other researchers have advised that she was born in Banffshire c 1816.
She married William Robertson (also from Banffshire) in London in 1840 with details from the marriage certificate as shown below.
Name: Jane Stevenson
Age: Full Age
Spouse Name: William Robertson, carpenter
Spouse Age: Full Age
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 2 Mar 1840
Parish: St Andrew Holborn
Borough: City of London
Father Name: William Stevenson, farmer
Spouse Father Name: William Robertson, farmer
Register Type: Parish Register
She had the following children -
Elizabeth b1841 London died young, Mary Ann b1847 London, Joseph b1849 London, Margaret Jane Cameron b 1855 London, and twins James and John b1855 Queensland Aust.
Family folklore is that Jane was related to Robert Louise Stevenson.
I am very keen to find Jane's birth, and parent details, and the same for her husband William Robertson.
Help please!
David Hassell

Given the marriage was in 1840 have you found them on the subsequent census returns.
1851 will give her birthplace.
Births Mar 1852
ROBERTSON Margaret Jane Cameron St. George S. 1d 154
Clearly they emigrated between 1852 and 1855

Thank you. Yes 1851 census shows both parents as b. Scotland and death register (Aust) shows Jane born and married(?) in Banff.
My challenge I think is to find the birth in Banffshire!

I think you need to research through Scotland People
http://www.
scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
Having no Scottish ancestry at all I have no experience of Scottish research, if anyone with helpful advice is online please pass that information on.
I love how in born in the UK is detailed by town and county in the census yet just Scotland was Ok.
The county town of Banffshire is Banff so the first port of call is that bit smaller given that marriages normally happened in the brides parish.Last edited by Kerrywood; 11-02-2012 at 09:25 AM. Reason: ScotlandsPeople is a paysite

Hi David, I found these entrys in the Queensland Index to Registers of Immigrant Ships' Arrivals 1848-1912
General Hewitt Southampton to Moreton Bay arrived 16 December 1854.
These Robertsons were listed amongst the passengers but whether or not they were one family I don't know.
Hugh.

Thank you Hugh. Yes, this is definitely the family. There were twins born in Ipswich 4 months after arriving.
Jane's marriage certificate in London shows her father as William, farmer so that may help with the Scotland People search suggested by Raffaele which I will try.
The London marriage was after banns so perhaps that would be another lead as well?

Just had a look at the images at the NSW Online microfilm of shipping lists for the General Hewitt and they were a family, William, carpenter Bamffshire Jane wife the same, Mary, Joseph and Margaret all born London.
Religion was noted as independent for the family which might help when searching for William's baptism or marriage.
Hugh.

Jane died on 13 Oct 1892 in Sydney, NSW. Yes I do have the death certificate which shows that her husband was deceased, that she was b. in Banff and m. in Banff (incorrect) at 24 yo and that her 5 children were living.
What do you think are the chances of finding Jane's birth and parent details?
