Default Auntie in Australia Sarah A Webster

During WW11 my family received lots of food parcels from "Auntie in Australia" My Mother continued to keep in touch with her by airmail until around 1965 -1970 when a Scotsman turned up at our house in Aldershot (I was living in East Africa at the time) with two glass candlebra, and telling her that Auntie had died. I assume she was an "Aunt" to my Father Bernard Ellison who lived in Sheffield - born 1901 until he joined the Army in 1918 as it was he apparently Auntie originally wrote to. I have found that Auntie lived in Melbourne at 152 Curzon St from the electoral roll of 1936, but can't find a marriage in Uk or Australia, using possible Aunties from Yorkshire relatives, or anything from Emigration lists etc. Any clues as to what I can try next? I don't know any of my Yorkshire relatives living or dead as my father did not return there after his marriage in 1926.

    Hi Ken,

According to the Argus Newspaper 7th October 1938 - Sarah Webster aged 65 years of Curzon Street North Melbourne fell down the stairs at her place of employment - (Unreadable) Transformers Pty Ltd., breaking both (unreadable).

This would give Sarah a birth year of 1873.

The Victorian Deaths have only three possible candidates age wise:

Daughter of Miles Webster and Emma nee Marshall died 1957 in Melbourne aged 82 (She was born in Victoria)

Daughter of Edward Hewitt and Sarah Eleanor nee Bale died Bacchus Marsh in 1956 aged 84

Daughter of John Batey and Blanche nee Reynolds died Bendigo in 1957 aged 85. (She was born in Victoria)

Any of these ring any bells?

    Cheers

It looks like this couple married in England. FreeBMD has Sarah Elenor BALE and Edward HEWETT with matching page references in the GRO marriage index in the second quarter of 1870, Tiverton district. Also on the same page (vol. 5b, p.798) are Joseph Richard E. CROSSING and Jane FURZE.

Following on with the electoral rolls the Bacchus Marsh Sarah and the Curzon St Sarah both appear at the same time so I think we can scrub Sarah from Bacchus Marsh.

Curzon St Sarah is still appearing in the 1950s still described as a whiteworker. If her age in the newspaper was correct this would put her in her eighties. This could of course just mean that her occupation details were not updated.

This seems like a possible 1881 census:

at Hillmoor, Culmstock, Devon (RG 11/2363, f.8, p.10)
Edward Hewett, head, 31, farmer of 50 acres, born Collompton, Devon
Elisabeth Hewett, wife, 29, b. Clayhidon, Devon
Sarah E. Hewett, dau, 10, scholar, born Uffculm, Devon
Phoebe Hewett, dau, 9, scholar, b. Culmstock, Devon
    plus a farm servant.
(this is from the LDS transcript; I haven't checked against the census enumerator's book.)

which would fit with a birth registration of a Sarah Eleanor Hewett in the Tiverton district in the last quarter of 1871. However, the mother's name is Elizabeth not Sarah Eleanor. One possible explanation is that Sarah Eleanor (the mother) may have died and then Edward remarried. Indeed, the death of a 23 year old Sarah Eleanor Hewett was registered in the Wellington, Somerset, district in the last quarter of 1872. Then there's another marriage of an Edward Hewett back in the Tiverton district Q3 1873, spouse either Mary Ann Pearce or Elizabeth Wright.

More evidence would be needed to prove/disprove this hypothesis.

P.S. But this Sarah is Sarah Eleanor, not Sarah A. (as per the thread title) so perhaps she isn't the Curzon Street Sarah.

Your father appears on the 1911 census ( well I assume it is him) Parents George and Frances? Grandparents John and Jane?
I had a quick look back throughthis Bernards census records and havent found any Sarah A as of yet,

Thank you to all who have replied to my query. The name Marshall looks good as it was the maiden name of my Grandmother. I had assumed originally that my father had actually met Sarah A Webster, but it could be that they were pen friends. So now looking for the marriage of Emma Marshall and Miles Webster or Emma Marshall in England prior to 1870's. Thank you so much to all who have replied.
