I have a Thomas Mitchell baptised Airth, Stirlingshire 08 Jun 1806, in my tree. I have no further info on him.
From the baptism register there was also a Thomas baptised 1800 to Robert & Mary, and in 1765 to Thomas & Jean.
The burial register has a death in 1811 of a Thomas Mitchell - no age given. This is the only death 1755-1909.
There is one Thomas Mitchell marriage to a Isabella RATTRAY in 1827.
From a Canadian Local History Book:
"Thomas Mitchell was a cabinet maker and one of the earliest pioneers in Grey County. He was born in 1805 in the Parish of Airth, Stirlingshire, Scotland and married Isabella Rattray of the same place in 1826. James, Robert and Beatrice were born in Scotland. In 1834 Thomas and Isabella left Scotland with their young family and settled in Canada at Smith's Falls. Two more children, Jane and Alexander, were born in Ontario"
BUT all the trees on Ancestry have the parents as a John Mitchell & Grizel Patterson. i can't find a couple/baptism relating to these.
Interestingly my Thomas has parents James & Beatrix and siblings Robert & Jane and a half brother Alexander.
Does anyone have any opinion/thoughts on this one?
Thanks
Mitch

Have now found the original book from where the extract was taken.
Thomas Mitchell was born in 1806 (not 1805) - even better.
He was a farmer - can't find any mention of a cabinet maker!
No mention of Thomas' parentage which is disappointing.

Hi Sue,
Thanks - I was just wondering about this Thomas' parentage. Thomas' story is well documented in the book (A History of Sullivan Township 1850 to 1975 p280-1) but only mentions he was born in Airth in 1806.
All the Ancestry member trees have Thomas' parents as John Mitchell & Griselda Paterson. I can't find any evidence this couple existed.
The Thomas Mitchell in my tree (born Airth 1806 to James Mitchell & Beatrix Watson) fits exactly and The naming of Thomas' children appears to me to follow Scottish naming patterns which indicate he is the son of James & Beatrix.
I would love to know where John & Griselda appear from!!
Thanks
Mitch

Anyone have access to Ontario marriages on Ancestry tell me if the marriage of Thomas MITCHEL (one L) to a Mary on the 27 March 1843 was to a Mary McGregor and if the Grooms Fathers name is given?
Thanks

Hi Mitch..
This is before official gov't marriage records so it is a copy of a Weslyn Methodists ministers record. Unfortunetly it only says the bride is Mary McGriggar ( their spelling) and the two witness's as Jas Corley and Malcom McGrigger... They are listed as living in St. Vincent township which is part of Grey County.
To be honest, you are very lucky to find this marriage for such an early date.... I have been searching for some of my husband's family for years with no luck.

Just read the book online...
I go past Thomas' property almost every day! Small world! Conc. 1 is the main highway now.

Hi Sue,
Many thanks for the additional detail. Much appreciated. Doing your family tree certainly makes the world smaller!!
