    Default William and Mary SARGENT

Can anyone help me find the marriage for this couple. They arrived in Langham, Essex before 1751 and already had four children. A William, Mary, Ann and Sophie. On 31st March 1751 they baptised a son Samuel in Langham and went on to have a Daniel, James, Joseph, Thomas and John. William was a Wheelwright and from age at death would have been born c1716. We have been searching for this marriage for years. With Langham being so close to the Suffolk border, did they come in from there or even further afield.

Has anyone come across this family?

Have you worked out any parishes in the vicinity of Langham where the marriage registers do NOT survive for the period 1735-1750? It may be that the detail you require has not survived, and it is helpful to know what gaps exist to confound your research. Have you looked into the possibility that they married by licence, and a bond or allegation has survived, usually with diocesan records? And what about locating the baptisms of the four children that came with them? Any hints from these? You are working in a period of history when names tended to be used within families, and so there may be other Samuel and Daniel and Sophies as siblings of the parents. Worth looking for. pwholt

    Rebecca,

Thanks for those early baptisms. We found that later ones but not those going throught the actual Registers which is why we thought they already had those children when they arrived it Langham. Don't know why we missed them but it was a very long time ago! Will look into that Westminster marriage.

Maureen I found a marriage for William Sargent and a Mary, it might not belong to you because of his occupation, but have a look anyway!

William Sargent, Attorney (spelt Sarjent on the image)

to Mary Roberts (in brackets looks like 'Kappell', a Widow)

    10 Jan 1744, Fleet London.

    Groom abode: St Ann, Blackfriars
    Bride abode: St Mary Whitechapel

    Not too good is it?!

Thanks Rebecca all contributions gratefully received! Date looks good as son William was baptised 1745, but the occupation lets it down.
