Cordwainers Hall London

Hi all wondering if anyone could help explaining this to me as I am little confussed!!

My relation Thomas Athawes born abt. 1705 died 1764 was an attorney, but all of the documents I have found that relate to him say that he lived at Cordwainers Hall, London. I thought Cordwainers Hall was for shoemakers so why was an attorney living their??

Thomas also had a partner in business called Samuel Commeline and there are quiet a few occasions when the Athawes and Commeline surname cross in documents. But I have just found this morning a document saying the Samuel Commeline also lived at Cordwainers Hall and he was an attorney.

Perhaps he acted as attorney for the Cordwainers Company and had an office at their hall? Certainly there was a connection with a later Athawes: Gentleman's Magazine vol. 79 (on Google Books) announces the death on 19 May 1796 of 'Edward Athawes, esq. many years clerk to the Cordwainers Company.'
