    Default North Shields, Howdon Road

    Hi,

I have found yet another photograph and on the back it is address to a Master William ....... cant make out what the surname is yet.

The address is 72 Howdon Road in North Shields, Northumberland.

I have searched that address on the 1911 census to find a family called "Bean" living there then and would like to know how can I search the earlier census' by address. I have tried going through the 1871 census CD I have for Northumberland although the street doesnt seem to exsit then. I am sure it was built before the 1901 census.

    Hi Jane,

FMP has the fascility to search by address. I have had a look on the 1901 census for you. No. 72 is not listed but...

2 families appear at no. 70 one f them being the 'Beans' Wiliam (fruiter and greengrocer) and Sarah his wife and 6 children.

    RG13/4800/63/6

Will have a look on the 1891 next to see who lives there then.

On the 1891 census Howdon Road, Chirton North Shields stops at no 71!

However the Beans are living in Little Bedford Street, Chirton - there 8 children at home

This is the address and the name on the back, its def not Bean, it hasnt been sent so it looks like its been hand delivered so its possible its the wrong address.

Wish they had dated these photographs

I don't suppose it could be No. 92, I know that this is a long shot since previous post stated that houses ended at 71.

Given the fancy writing flourishes could it be 12 rather than 72?

Could the surname be an attempt at Hazeldine/Hazledine (or other variants)?

Regarding the surname, my first thought was that it began with an 'H'. However, the 'H' in Howdon is completely different. So I am now going to suggest that it begins with 'Al...'. The letter immediately after the 'd' is very like the last letter of 'Master', so I've pencilled that one in as an 'r'. Which all leads me to suggest that the surname is Alasandre or Alasandrie. Neither seems very likely though.

Re. the date, the 'divided back' style of postcard owas introduced in 1902, the www tells me, so the card can't be earlier than that. I believe the wording of the instructions on the card can also be used for dating. I will go and see if I can find more about this. . .

    I've now learned a little more about postcard history . . .

The instruction "For inland postage only" would have ceased to be relevant after 1907 when postal rules were changed, allowing messages to be put on some cards being sent overseas. So the back of the card was probably printed between 1902 and 1907. However, that doesn't tell you when the date of the photograph on the other side. I would guess that photographers bought in batches of such cards, already printed on one side. It may have taken them some time to use up old stock.
