    Default Edwin Nuttall

Hi all can anyone help with info on Edwin Charles Nuttall DOB 1903/4 Fulham. Mother Eliza Ann Nuttall Father John Nuttall mostly living in Hammersmith area. I have found Eliza Ann on the 1911 census living with my grandma Ada Rose and her other daughter Edith Florence but can't find any trace of Edwin (known as Ted). Fairly certain the birth date is right as I think I found a birth entry for him also a possible death entry in the Midlands. Family confirmed he did move up there. They also remembered a wife Glad/Gladys. Any help much appreciated

Try this reference in the 1911 census...

    RG14/6742 SN1

    West London District School, Ashford

Edwin C G NUTALL, age 8, birth place unknown

Note: If you can't use the reference (too many results) then you should be able to find him if you search by name/place. Registration district is Staines.

    Death: Edwin Charles G.Nuttall Jul-Sep quarter 1979 Walsall,Staffs Vol 34 Page 0349
Marriage:There are 6 possible choices for Edwin between 1922 and 1942,I'd go for 1931 to Agnes Lucas,Blackburn,Lancs as it's the nearest sounding name to Gladys that I can see.

Thank you both very much. olliecat that definitely sounds like him on the 1911 census. I think his dad died when he was quite young and his mum struggled with the younger ones. I did look up the West London district school on the internet and I think it was for boys from poorer families or ones that were 'trouble' Apparently Edwin certainly was. My Dad remembers him turning up frequently with nowhere to stay and no job. Bless him though sounds like a hard start to life.
I'm having real trouble with searching for this on ances***. Putting his name in brings nothing up and I don't know how to search just using an address.

    Ancestry hasn't indexed Middlesex yet.

It wasn't an industrial school or reformatory. The school was run by a group poor law unions (West London ones, obviously). There's a page of information with pictures on the Workhouse site under "West London School District".

I see you're in London. The document "Register of children in the West London School District" covering 1897-1924 may contain useful information. This is part of the Hammersmith Board of Guardians collection at the London Metropolitan Archives, reference HHBG/083/001. At least that should tell you how long he was there.

Looking briefly at the London Electoral Rolls on Ancestry.
There is an Edwin Nuttall in 1920 living at 12 Curwen Road, Hammersmith. Also an Eliza and a James Nuttall.
(A Stephen Henry Angell also lives at that address)
    Moving on...

12 Curwen Road has Eliza Ann Nuttall from about 1927 to 1936 (Stephen Angell gathers a Louisa Mary Angell).
In 1936 an Ada Britton lives with Eliza Ann. (Though she may be the married daughter of the Angells)
Then Ancestry asked me to "call back later" ~~sigh!~~

Do you recognise the address and what was your Ada's surname?

Sorry, ignore that question. I had assumed that Ada was Eliza Ann's mother, not her daughter!

A piece of probably useless info is that a
Jno Nuttall worked as a cleaner on the GWR at Paddington Station from 17 June 1882 to 1 March 1884

Thank you all again. Yes Mutley that is them in Curwen Road Hammersmith. I know this as Eliza Ann (grt Gran) has this address on her death cert. James is an older brother of Edwin's I have just been looking at the electoral rolls and found them quite helpful in giving the full and correct names of some of my ancestors. Don't know who the Angells are, my Ada became a Smith lived nearby in Hammersmith.
The Jno Nuttall is I think another of Edwon's brothers, I know a lot of the family worked at Paddington.
Peter thanks for the info on the West London district school. It made interesting reading.
