Default Crimea - second pair of eyes needed please!

    Hi everyone

I am looking through the campaign medals and awards roll (WO100). I wondered if anyone can look at an entry for a Joseph Goddard. His regiment number is 1828 (Royal Artillery) but I cannot make the rank out. Is it G of something? In the remarks section there is a W. Does this mean wounded?

    Thanks as always

    Marie

Looks like Grs & Drs to me -- Gunners and Drivers.

There are two separate lists shown on Ancestry, both from the same source (WO 100/23). One doesn't provide a regimental number for Joseph GODDARD, but the Nominal List for 'W' Battery appears to show his number as 47. I believe 1828 is the regimental number of the man above (James CUNNINGHAM).

I'm not sure about the letter in the Remarks column. Usually these comments relate to how/where the medal was delivered. It doesn't look like the other Ws that are identifiable from known abbreviations such as W.O. (War Office). But it may be in a different hand. No doubt someone else will come along soon and explain.

What is the difference between the two separate lists?
