Default John Lewis b1799 Gloucester - Is this Him???

    Hi

I think I might have finally climbed over my brickwall!!

Does anyone have access to the Gloucester Parish records?? If so, I would be really grateful if you could look these two records up for me?

I've been searching for information about my gt gt granddad for yonks - I know plenty of information about him after his second marriage to Sophia Robinson but practically nothing beforehand.

Anyway - the first record entry is I hope for John's marriage to Elizabeth Harris - here are the details:

John Lewis married Elizabeth Harris 2nd July 1820 in Gloucester St Michael, register reference is P154/14 IN 1/10. I need to know what John's occupation and his father's occupation were - also possibly his date of birth and anything about witness James Robinson?

    Also, hopefully his birth entry:

John Lewis born 24th March 1799 Gloucester St Aldgate, parents John and Margaret. Would love to know father's occupation, mother's maiden name, address if possible.

    Thanks you!!

Although there might be information about John's occupation, it is not a definite. His father might be one of the witnesses, but will not be recorded as such. Have a look here to see what to expect to see on a marriage record of this time.

The mother's maiden name will not necessarily be recorded; likewise, the father's name and occupation. It was not until 1813 that records for baptisms became more standardised. Again, have a look here to see what to expect to find in the parish register.

    Thanks Both

I was hoping that there would be more info - I know that John's father was also called John from the certificate from his second marriage. I know from various records that John junior was an Iron Moulder or Pinner, while his father was listed as a carpenter - I hoped that this info on both certificates would nail him once and for all.

Sophia, his second wife was a lot younger han John - John was the same age as Sophia's father, James Robinson so wondered if James and John had known each other for a long time. It seemed a big coincidence that a James Robinson was a witness at John & Elizabeth's wedding in 1820 - could this have been my gt gt grandad????

Can you think of anywhere else I could gather more information about John and his earlier life?

    thanks
    Jill

Could be John's father but nothing conclusive I'm afraid, there are just too many John Lewis!

I found him!!!! At long last I've tumbled my brickwall!!

He married Elizabeth Harris as above - the reason I couldn't find him in any of the Gloucester Census prior to 1861 was because he wasn't living Gloucester. I found him and Elizabeth in St Giles, Oxford in 1841 and then in Heap, Lancashire in 1851. I don't think they had any children - there certainly weren't any listed on the census.

Thank you for your help everyone!

    Jill
