    Default Crisis of conscience?

Whilst trawling through Horsleydown baptisms in 1837 I came across an interesting item

Hannah Fulford daughter of Hannah and John Fulford has additional text written above her name and dated 1840 ... basically it states that the mother says the child is illegitimate, she wasn't the child of the registered father and then goes on to list the name and address of the actual father ... the guilt must have weighed on her mother ...

More likely to be concern about child maintenance. See the summary of the New Poor Law on the workhouse site, particularly the rules on illegitimacy.
