Please need help with a check into Ance*** * com with the following Reginald H Pearce married Eleanor Rotheram Sept 1940 Poole Dorset. ( Ref 5a 1197 )
I am trying to establish the ages ( d.o.b ) and the parents names before I obtain a certificate.

The 'Dorset, England, Marriages and Banns' collection on Ancestry has nothing more modern than 1921, unfortunately (unless it is described incorrectly, of course!).

When ordering a certificate from the GRO you can specify that it must match certain criteria: if it doesn't, your money will be refunded. A word of caution though: it is best not to be too exact when it comes to ages. Perhaps you could just specify a range of ages when you apply?

One normally obtains a certificate in order to establish that sort of information. If however you want to use some information in your possession to check that you're ordering the right certificate, then simply order accordingly without quoting a reference.

For example if you know that Eleanor's father's name was Edward then order a marriage certificate for an Eleanor Rotheram in Dorset in around 1940 with a father's first name of Edward. The fewer checks you specify, the better.

By the way. the brides name in the GRO index is shown as Eleanor M Rotheram.
