Default McConaghey / McConaghty / Coneghy

    Hi Folks,

I'm new to the site but have been tracing my family tree for a few years now. I've hit a brick wall with a relative who went to Manchester / Liverpool (?) in the mid-late 1950' to work as an Agricultural Labourer. As i'm not sure of the correct spelling of his surname it has proved difficult to find even a scrap of information.

He was Patrick (Patsy) McConaghey / McConaghty ? Born around 1917 in Fallalea, Maghera, Co Derry, N Ireland. Later lived in Dungiven, Co Derry before he moved to England.

I'd appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction or if you have any helpful tips I'd greatly appreciate them.

    Many Thanks

    Mary Jane

Hi Mary Jane and welcome to Brit-Gen

The Surname Interests forum is only for letting members know the family names you are researching and each thread is normally closed after the initial post. However, as you have a specific query relating to Manchester or Liverpool I have moved your thread over to our Lancashire forum.

However, given the scant information you have on this person and the fact that very few records for the 1950's would be available for perusal I'm not sure that it would be possible for us to find out much about him. Having said that, it's possible that someone might have an idea.

Hello Mary Jane and welcome to the forum.

Not only is the name difficult to research but also the time frame.
You will not find him on a census seeing as the last in both the UK and Ireland were in 1911 before he was born.
I doubt, as an Agricultural Labourer he will be in any trade directories.

If you are lucky he may have left a will, he may have a criminal record or you might find a newspaper snippet.

Otherwise a birth, a marriage and a death are all you are likely to be able to trace. I am assuming you have something to know his occupation in 1950 when he was about 30 years old. Can you tell us any more about him?

    Hi Mutley,

Many thanks for your reply. I really don't have many clues to go on other than he never returned home with the men he went to England to work with. The story is that they travelled to Manchester / Liverpool (not sure which) to 'work on the hay'! I have no idea if he settled in the area or moved on.

I realise there are not many records I can access for this period, but I would be happy to find just a shread of evidence relating to his life...good or bad!

Can I access local newspapers or criminal records for this period online?

    Thanks MaryJane
