I recently obtained my grandfathers army papers and can see that his trade was described as horseman.
He enlisted in the army in Lincoln in 1921 and joined the Royal regt Artillery.
The only address that I have for him before his army days was in Old Bolingbroke.
I know it sounds daft to question this trade but just wondering whether we are talking about him looking after farmers horses ie/ stable lad or racehorses etc......
Can anybody throw any light on this occupation.....
Thanks in advance.

Depends on the context. On a farm he feeds and waters horses attends to their bedding, harnesses and drives them. Bracketed with carter, ploughman, wagoner, teamster. On the other hand, in stables, he'd be a groom.

I would go with Peter, it depends on the context but might guess that he was a groom.
But.... Bolingbroke, now there is an interesting place.
I've just spent a very pleasant half an hour wandering around there in Cyberspace.
Interesting history it has
