    The 1901 census also holds a clue to Annie's name before her marriage to Jasper. Their son,Thomas, was living with an uncle, Thomas Usher, at 19 Pensher Street, Gateshead. Thomas himself was enumerated as Thomas Usher Dinning.

    Indexed on the same page was Ann Usher

    Right it certainly looks like all this information is on the right lines after the last two posts. I know my dad had cousins called Usher so I'm going to be spending a fair bit of money over the next few months to follow up these.
    Thank you very much for your help. I'm sure I'll soon be able to work out how to research these things myself with a bit of luck.
